Not the old Speccy game. I woke up this morning with an itch on my arm. Got out of bed and saw my desk and window sill crawling with dozens of ants. Got the hoover out and hoovered up most of them but saw them coming in through the window sill to the left. There being a hole there I guess. I could see them crawling up the wall outside and making their way in. Put down some ant killing liquid which dozens of them staring feasting on. I really hope this sorts it out and I don't get more invasions. It was like something out of Aliens. Anyone else suffering with the little monsters? It's not like I eat in there or there is any food debris I'm aware of.

There were a few the other day but they was all and they all cleared off. Now back with a whole army. Yucky dooberries.
 
We had the one day mass attack of flying ants. Luckily we were sunbathing on the patio and saw them assembling the squadrons. Running around we closed all the windows and open doors before they took to the air. The blackbirds, jays and magpies had an unexpected feast.

One year we had them in the house and it was a nightmare finding them all. They live under the greenhouse normally (trying to undermine it) and get liberally dosed with ant powder in return. Developing aerial combat ability is a disaster if undiscovered in time.
 
I had this issue some years ago, one day my kitchen was swarmed with ants. There was a small hole in the window frame of a side window next to my front door.

Hoovered them up, put a bit of sealant over the hole and popped to Tesco to buy some ant killing stuff.
 
I keep ants as pets :D
get about a few thousand messor barbarus that are making queens already (will be infertile, never get signals to fly off and mate and act like workers untilt he colony decides they consume to many resources and eats them.
also got Acromyrmex Octospinosus leaf cutters a few hundred :D they kinda scary when I go to empty the old leaves and stems from their feeding chamber.

Hopefully they never escape, I've seen wild videos on ant keeping discords of native colonies invading peoples houses, raiding their ant colonies or feeder insect breeding setups and carrying off larve/pupae :cry:

just clean the pheromones leading to your windows hole away and plug the gap with bluetac or something, our native ants likely can't chew though it.

BTW only about 5-15% of an ant colony leaves the nest at a time, about 30% of their numbers are just reserve workers who chill out doing nothing apart from guarding the nest..

unless they take the poisoned food source back to the nest, the colony will survive.

Awww, I was hoping for a good old nostalgic Speccy thread.

Well, there were dozens on the poison when I came in about 30 mins ago, now they have mostly gone. I have blocked the hole with some Blu tack and hopefully this will keep them at bay now.

When I was a kid in Cyprus (about 3), my parents apparently came into my room one night and found me completely covered in ants. The ants in Cyprus are pretty big, not tiny as shown in the above photos.

I still believe this was better than later in life, when I sat on a nest of ticks. Hundreds of the little suckers. Had to strip down at the car trying to find them all.

Over here we use 'Terro' bait traps. Little plastic containers that the ants go into and take the liquid back to the nest. They work extremely well. Takes about 2 days, but we don't use anything else now.

Both my partner and I still feel all itchy now. Nasty little creatures. I'm not seeing them marching up the wall outside now. Seems my mass genocide has done the trick.

I was in Ghana in 1965 as my father was working there. There was a large mango tree in the garden which i decided to climb. Bad decision as i soon fell out if the tree covered in large red ants. The gardener hosed me down but i was covered in bites for days and calamine lotion too.

e: hadn't appreciated that phase iv is the name given to part of the ant life cycle.

I always wipe the area with ammonia, which will keep them from coming in again.
 
Annoying as ants are, I`m very happy that I dont live somewhere with far worse. I met a Lady from Australia who said that she checked her bathroom areas for venomous snakes every day and her shoes for spiders.

I seem to have a lot of issues with nasty creatures. Spiders for example.

Good old Aussies love a story about all the deadly creatures they have and how careful you need to be :rolleyes: Lived in the Northern Territory for 3 years saw 1 snake and that was dead on the road.
