We've had a problem with ants for the last couple of years despite numerous doses of powder they still remain.

I've just been out in the garden and made it my mission to track them down. I turned over a rock where they seemed to be a few moving around. There was a few tunnels on the surface and (what I can only describe as) a red larvae about 3/4 of an inch long. Looking at a couple of websites I'd say they were black garden ants but I can't find any details on this larvae thing.

Anyone know what it is (queen)?

Perhaps the larvae thing was some food for the ants. AFAIK from watching David Attenborough, the Queen, and Queen candidates are always kept at the bottom of the nest.

One day ants will rule the planet.

Do not under any circumstances pour homemade napalm into the nest and detonate it. The nest was under a wall at the end of the backs, and I swear we put a couple of bricks into low Earth orbit.

Apparently, if you can find the nest boiling water is the prefered choice, for some reason home made explosives are frowned upon. Just make sure you kill the Queen.

Ooh, homemade napalm and kill the Queen in one post, MI5 will be knocking at the door soon.

Can you provide a picture of the lil antys :)

Used to go play in ant nests all the time as a kid, it started out killing them, then it moved onto throwing sand in there ears and making them fight each other gladiator style and see who would win, then there number depleted lots and i felt bad so i started to go out and catch bugs and find food for them and drop it around there nests and look after them :D

Ive been bitten so many times they dont even effect me any more(only the red ants)

But those little tiny ants are still very much painfull :(

Have you used the gel which you put a drop on some foil? They take it back to the nest and it kills the rest.

Theyre probably Lasius Niger.

Ants eggs are also usually a white colour, like a small grain of rice. The queen will be much bigger and sometimes have wings.

Why not just close all the hatches, ants don't have opposable thumbs so will find it very difficult to get out again.

Might use air pressure from their backend to blow the tunnel clear :D

Forget about ant killing powders etc. The best thing to kill ants outside is, Diesel, no need to ignite it, just pour it on the nest ;)
