Ant tips for resurecting a sim that cant be read from?

My sim is about 6 years old, and my HTC desire wont recognise it any longer, it just stopped working, tried it in a different handset, spat on it rubbed it, polished it, jiggled it, it just won't show up on a phone.

Just want to rescue some numbers off of it, a friend suggested rubbing it with tin foil, any ideas? Don't know why it would just stop working, it's not like I ever take it out of my phone for it to get damaged, any ideas why this might happen?

You can't restore them but as it's a HTC desire did you check they didn't already sync to contacts.google.com or were you still storing contacts on the SIM?

The old trick was to "colour in" in the contacts with a pencil and then use a rubber to remove it - it apparently removed a lot of oxidisation, can't harm to try.

Silly question - but have you tried another phone??
