Antec Price Increases.

This is like how the price of houses have shot up over the last few years - PC owners will think their custom systems are worth more than they were when they built them, then borrow more money against them to build a mega-gaming-rig; then prices crash and it gets repossessed :(:(:( Yikes ;)

For those who have already bought their stuff it makes a nice change to see it not going down in price, lol, which is usually the norm and quite annoying!!

Cases are one of the few items which don't really drop in price that much anyway, by which I mean they just tend to get phased out for slightly newer models. Clearance sales aside, it's very rare you'll see a top brand case which was once say ~£100 drop down under £50.

Power Supplies are a bit different in that with power hungry gfx cards hitting the streets over the last couple of years, we've see a big rise in the demand for >600W PSUs, something which was almost unthinkable a while back. Prices for a decent brand usually tend to be around 10p/W, with top brands at more like 15p/W. I'm quite pleased to have got my NorthQ 850W Black Magic modular for £59, normally when you drop down to 7p/W or below you're talking something a bit dodgy.

if prices go up too much then the majority of people will not spend - it's a simple as that.

Certain vendors like Logitech, Antec etc had held their prices across last year despite the pound falling flat against the Euro and a 40% drop in the pound against the $.

Antec is an American company, Creative are from Singapore. I don't think either operate in Euros (since I don't think either have manufacturing facilities in EU).

Equally, since you'd be in the know, did Antec and Creative lower their prices when the £ was at over $2, I doubt it.

If the price increases haven't kicked in yet, how come everywhere I look on the internet, they are selling the P182 at least £35 cheaper than OcUK.

Rot. Read up on Supply and Demand.

demand and supply work if they cant product the amount required, plus the demand only works when the economy is booming, in a recession demand drops, people look for alternative products, ie luxury goods are elastic, in a deflationary enviroment goods should be dropping in price.

you think iam going to pay £70 for a psu when it was 55 a month ago.

At those price it starts to make the EMS a better deal.

This is what happens when Gordo the Clown decides to devalue the pound :(

I almost wish we had the Euro now :(

True it's not just pc components .. in my line of work product ranges launched for 2009 at end of January are going up as much as 19% on current RRP and its not because they are better products... if anything some products are are being down graded to meet price points needed in the market.

Antec had a price increase in December - they have just announced another price increase again this week. The 2nd increase being bigger than the first. We sell a lot of P182's, a lot more than some competitors, hence they have old stock. We have had to buy in since the first price increase.

I was going to look at the increases today - but I am going to hold off as long as I can, so if your planning to buy, do it sooner rather than later.

Another example for comparision, the Logitech G15 is going to go up very shortly too. The new price is looking to be around £70 for this. I have secured 500 units at the current price, I have cleared out the UK distribution.

Once these have been sold, I will have no option other than increasing the price.

I was thinking that Antec was doing this to bring UK prices back inline with their home US prices ... however having just checked USA pricing, it is still cheaper there even before a price bump here. It seems that they are bringing us into line with EU (where at current 1:1 rate, the same case is almost £60 cheaper here in UK).

Antec is America yes but their distribution channel sells in Euros. Antec make the conversion to € from $ when stock lands in their warehouse in Holland and then distributors in the UK covert that to £s. As for Creative, they deal in USD which has seen a drop of 30-40%.

Both the mentioned companies didn't drop their prices when the $ was at $2 because they were basing their pricing for the whole of last year on that rate. As it started going down further and further the companies simply made less money. The general consensus was to hold the prices for Christmas to make sure they had a good one.

Yes, but Spain (no offence) is far weaker economically than Britain. Britain is the 2nd strongest economy in Europe (Germany being 1st due to their manufacturing). And infact, if anything, Britain should be far less prone to any economic problems had it been managed better (since we do not rely on manufacturing but rather on service).
Had we been in the Euro right now, it is possible we would be better off.

(However, I'm too attached to having Pounds Stirling as the currency :()

I'm a sort of ex-pat living in Finland and I love the Euro. I can travel widely throughout Europe without being raped for around 9% every time I exchange currency.

I also work for an international company (turnover around 6 billion €), and sometimes we just choose to forget about the UK, it's just too much of a pain in the bottom to deal with. There is not much incentive to invest in our UK operation when we know that we carry the risk of currency fluctuations. We are doing very nicely elsewhere, with lest risk.

I also used to believe in Queen, country, the fact that our ancestors fought hard to prevent "Europe" telling us what to do. Nowadays, with more international exposure and experience, I have learned that much of Europe has watched the progress (more accurately, the lack of), in the UK, and have pretty much decided to let them be. If they don't want full membership of the club, then let them stew if things get tough.

The UK is now deep in the brown stuff, and will sink deeper. As someone pointed out earlier, the UK doesn't manufacture much anymore, so even when the pound is cheap, you guys have nothing to sell. All you do is receive a freshly-ripped bumhole when you want to buy imported stuff.

Analysts reckon the UK would be much better off had it joined the common currency, I for one am sad that the "British is Best" arrogance of the last 15 years has now left the economy in a worrying situation, and despite what the popularists might want to tell you, this has not been caused by Gordon the Gopher, this is something much deeper.
