Anti Case Question

Ok - maybe a strange question but here goes;

due to the strange setup I am after I would like to know whether people think having a case is important?

My plan is to "wall mount" the mobo, HDDs and power.

Not just screw them to the wall but not far off either, the power would sit on a beam 30cms from the ceiling and then the mobo attached to some wood screwed to the beam with the hd drives also mounted.

now what are the major issues with doing this? I will enclose the area and add a few fans front and back so air circulates, but what I want to know is, if it isnt needed will a lack of a case be a big issue?

(power will be easy enough to sort with a button attached to the enclosure)

why not. (there is a good reason but I will only explain if everyone just answers with why! :) )

I "could" just buy a case and stick it on the floor.

but I want to do something a bit different.

I want to check that the case serves no other purpose than as a store.

It stops EMI Radiation.
Unless it has a window. :p

Allows airflow to cool all of the components.

Makes it easy to move it.

but the main thing you would need to worry about - it grounds the motherboard.

So if you are wallmounting it, I would have wires joining all of the usual "earth" points to the outside of the PSU case.

So all mobo screw holes, a wire to each HDD etc. :)

I guess the only issue would be dust.

it definatly needs grounding otherwise you gonna be left with loads of paper wights if your not careful!

it has been done i hve seen coffee tables - plexiglass/acrylic wallmounted cases!

As before, u sure about the grounding 33L. I need to be convinced otherwise.

well dust I had thought about so can enclose it with airflow for ventilation, now if you are right about grounding the mobo that would be an issue.

but are you sure?

as for moving it, I wont need to move it and that is one reason to make it more of a "feature" rather than a case.

well if I decide to go a head I will share my experience.

but knowing me Ill bottle it and buy a case! :(

:)

the psu case has a grounding wire usually attached to it! This means since the psu is contact with the chassis and the mobo all and everything else attached to the chassis it makes sense that its there for a reason. but its simply worked arond by using a mobo tray and making sure the psu and other componets are in contact to the tray.

The psu has an earthwire on it to save your life in case of earth leakage currents, since the psu is not double insulated. How many times have u built a system outside a case to test components ?

that was where I first got the idea.

i had all mycomponents on my workbench to try and find a faulty part.

my psu had nice long cables and stuff was spread out everywhere.

no issues arose!

Exactly - dont forget about acrylic cases as well.

Why would you want to chance using a pc outside of a case?

Just a few problems.

Dust
Static
EMI
Airflow
Unshielded from anything in the room
Put un-needed strain on the GPU (if it's on the wall what is supporting it?)
It would look tacky :p

Yes, lots of us 'test' components outside of the case but I certainly wouldn't like to leave say £700+ of components outside of a case for a long period of time.

I remember having a test bench system setup at work which was basically what you are suggesting, but all screwed to a sheet of mdf. It was made of old components that were worthless tho :) and was a 486. So we didn't mind if it got dusty or anything.

I guess you could put some clear perspex over some of the components but it still would look tacky.

Well from what I understand his PC will be in a case, but mounted on the wall aswell. How I understand it is that the components will be mounted on the wall and then a case/cover will be put over that to protect from dust etc.

Dust is really the main issue but if mounted it all properly then you shouldn't need to worry.

yes there will be a case of sorts protecting against dust and exposure.

not really thought what I will make the case from, probably old computer cases which I can cut up and play around with! :D
