I need to send a motherboard to someone in the post, but I cannot for the life of me find any anti-static bags (let alone a big one!). Is there anything else I could wrap it in? I had thought brown paper and then lots of bubble wrap.

Bubble wraps fine, worked for me.

even a bit of cloth tbh as long as its in a box and doesn't get damaged, how many people can honestly ever say that they have had something damaged by static!

its touching it to get it out of the bag which is the problem!

Sorry, I didn't read the OP properly, I thought you meant what do you put it in after it's in a anti static bag. And I would wrap it in bubble wrap.

I dare you to come to my place of work (an electronics manufacturer) and say that! You'd be thrown out in seconds!

We see a lot of components damaged by ESD (electro-static discharge). People far too often often under-estimate the damage caused to electronic devices by static. Just because your item works straight after handling it doesn't mean you haven't damaged it. Static damage can take months to develop.

At work our factory floor is made from static dissipative material and has to be re-treated every few months. We have to wear an anti-static white coat, 2x earthing foot straps, and anyone handling PCBs has to wear an earthing wrist strap at their workbench. Each workbench is fitted with an anti-static mat as well.

At a minimum you should make an effort to earth yourself before handling a static-sensitive device i.e. if you're working inside your PC ensure the mains lead is plugged into both the PSU and mains socket and then touch a metal part of the case. This process will discharge any static charge on you to earth.

I would let the buyer know you haven't got any Anti Static bags left, and it may take a couple more days before you post it - then get one ASAP.

If I had bought it from you I would rather you are honest with me, than send it wrapped in cloth or a make shift anti static bag...

Go to a local PC repair shop or similar and kindly ask for one. I don't see why they'd decline.

I killed a Soyo mobo with static.. (well, didnt really kill as much as just plain break it - it would boot, but the northbridge/southbridge/southeastbridge/bridge would do its nut and whenever I did anything demanding the computer would just reboot itself. Changed to a cheapo PC Chips one and all was well)
