I've used Bitdefender Free on Windows 8/8.1. Although someone has mentioned above that MS themselves recommended a 3rd party AV solution a while back, although it looks the same there are a few more options that looks like they're thinking about AV as it needs to be thought of, ifor example, allowing upload of samples to help detect virus sooner, and cloud based protection. You can see there are various protections by the file versions shown on the settings page.
So I've decided to just stick with Win 10 MS defender unless I hear from a good source that it's rubbish. It's never been rubbish just that some others probably provide better protection at times - and I say at times as I think things change even between updates.
PS I really liked Bitdefender. I think AV should just work quietly in the background - Bitdefender is the same as Windows Defender in that respect.
