Well, my Symantec/Norton/whatever subscription is up for another year. So, should I sheepishly pay the big corporation for another year, or is there something better?

Truth be told, I don't object to paying a few £££ a month to keep all the miscellaneous **** that comes my way from causing trouble. I know my systems have been on the receiving end of quite a few attempts - none of which got past the firewall or the antivirus. Truth be told most of them were aimed at the *nix box, and we all know how much success they'll have with that, but I don't intend to let down my guard. These machines are, after all, my business (literally).

Of course, it's not perfect. It's bloated as hell for a start, but it does the job.

So, back to the original question. :)

Nod32 is easily the best ( http://www.eset.com/ )

Cheap and has won loads of awards. Doesnt hog your system eaither & is one of the fastest scanners. I've been using it 2 years now & cant praise it enough :)
Most people in these forums will say Nod32!

Agreed :)

Definately the best piece of AV software I've used. Its quick, easy to use and very light on the system - especially at boot up. Cleaned up stuff Norton didn't even detect!

The only thing that you are really gong to see get reccomended by vast majoroties on this forum is NOD32 + Kaspersky Internet Security 6.
My personal preference is Kaspersky
All the fuss about resorces is pointless as mine uses below 10k.

As above NOD32 or kaspersky are the best about, personally used NOD for ages. But I may give kaspersky a try when my subscription runs out. Not that there is anything wrong with nod.

You can always try both via the 30 day free trials available on their websites. I've just done that as from everything I've read here and elsewhere it always seems comes down to NOD or Kaspersky with personal preference being the only thing to decide between them.

I've gone with Kaspersky simply because I preferred the UI :D

AVAST.
Have used it all year with no problems at all. Very lite on resources speedy scans pleasant interface and has Actually been secure for 10months now.
O yer and it's FREE.

I bought and use BitDefender, I've got version 9 - they have recently up-graded to version 10. I'm pretty sure they give a 30 day trial. I used the 30 day trial then registered for my year's subscription. You are allowed two installations, which suits me fine, one for my desktop and one for my laptop.

It has found items which Avast skipped. The version I have has firewall, anti-spy, AV, parental control (not used) etc. I like it.

The link gives it the highest rating too. :)

Just some reviews of that site you have linked to:

Seems like they just want to earn money thru revenue programs. The programs which offer higher revenues are on higher places in the charts. They do not do any real comparisons. Absolutly faked results. Confirmed by many companies.

and

Their AV reviews contain for example WinAntiVirus in the product list... WinAntiVirus is a rogue aplication, mentioned in the Spyware Warrior's list (link below). I'd advice people do not follow advice given in these "reviews".

Just cos it's in print dont make it true!

PC Cillin gets my vote.

But as suggested in previous replies NOD32 is extremely good.

Avast seems pretty good as well.

there's absolutely no point use avg or avast, with spybot search and destroy. never got any viruses even visiting dodgy sites and that's with on-line scans to check. There really is no point in paying, but then it's your money.

Don't believe in free software when it comes to antivirus. :)

Yes, I know they use them as testbeds for their bigger 'corporate' brothers. :)

Plus I'm hoping NOD32 will give my laptop a nice kick up the backside (especially from Norton). Going to benchmark it and see. If it isn't a big enough jump, I'll reconsider. :)

does it matter as long as they work?

Infact the only pay for software I have is MS office and that's only as sometimes open office sometimes messes up the layout of application forms and that's just not acceptable. Oh and games. Pretty much everything else can be done for free just as well.

but different people, different mind sets :)
