Antivirus?

See edit above. :)

Plus, since I use the PCs for business, breakage isn't an option. Therefore I consider the £1.17/month/PC (5 PCs) to be justifiable. :)

Nod32 is easily the best ( http://www.eset.com/ )

Cheap and has won loads of awards. Doesnt hog your system eaither & is one of the fastest scanners. I've been using it 2 years now & cant praise it enough :)
Most people in these forums will say Nod32!

I won't use anything else, I used norton before I found out how good NOD was and in comparison Norton is pants.

NOD32 here - into my third year with it now.

One thing in its favor vs Kapersky - from my point of view - is that it I've never once seen a report of it giving a false positive. Kapersky on the other hand does get it wrong sometimes - but not nearly as frequently as McAfee, which is truly the king of the false positives.

Anyone able to get the free trial version of NOD32? I got to about 90% of the download and then it froze. Now just keeps timing out. :(
OK - I'm all recommended out, but no-one has anwered this yet.

NOD32 isn't the best, it may have used to be but it is losing ground in my opinion. I was using NOD32 on my PeeCee and a trojan got through it, I had to use Avast to get rid of it.

Kaspersky, Avast (which uses the Kaspersky engine) or Bitdefender own all other antivirus software. If you want to pay, go for Kaspersky or Bitdefender, if you want free go with Avast.

Well, the NOD32 trial is going OK, so far.

Benchmark results:

NOD32 On-Access - 5-10% faster than Norton On-Access. Disappointed given the claims.
NOD32 On-Demand - 50% faster than Norton On-Demand. That's more like it.

The word document ESET sent me when I signed up for the trial is somewhat revealing - looking at Virus Bulletin results since 1998. NOD32 scored a 95% success rate on Virus Bulletin tests, with only Norton getting even close.

Now of course it's a nice bit of marketing, and there's the perfectly valid argument that there's lies, damned lies, and statistics, but still, it does make me wonder.

PS - I believe it's well-known that NOD32 is a little weak when it comes to trojans. Something that I believe is being addressed in the new 2.7 version - of which I'm running the beta.

To be fair, I'll fetch down a copy of Kaspersky if it's on trial and give it a go in a VM like I did to assess NOD32.

Is there a change log or anything for the beta or it is just from what people have said / claimed?

Dont forget to post the comparison results

I've actually decided to try the Avast route instead of Kaspersky. I've changed my mind about free stuff and I'm going to give it a go. :)

Either way, it's not fair to give benchmark results based on a VM, and I'm not sure I have the original Symantec scores now anyway. :(

Anti-virus is a last line of defence IMO. There should be other security measures in place to prevent a virus from ever reaching your system :)

Bit of a spanner in the works but oh well :p Food for thought maybe.

I don't go browsing dodgy sites out of habit, and neither do I go opening dodgy attachments (although my antispam tends to nuke them anyway), so those are my first lines of defence. :)

Doesn't stop an accident happening though (and particularly with the crop of IM viruses) - so I'd rather be protected than not. :)

Sorry to dredge this thread up from the depths, but I was researching whether to pay for NOD32 instead of using Avast.

Berserker, Avast is only free for non-commercial use. Just thought I'd mention it in case you get hit with any fines.

By the way, I never had any virii when running Avast, and only a couple of false positives (one of them while trying to download IE7 from Microsoft's site) in the year that I was running it. I just thought I'd see if there were any performance benefits using NOD32.

I shall be buying Anti Virus software next year, using AOL Kaspersky free edition atm , seems to be working a treat.

Never used NOD32, but having switched from Norton Internet Security 2006 to Kaspersky Internet Security 6, my vote has to go to Kaspersky.

It's waaaay better.

TBH, drinking anything stronger than lemonade, then breathing on your screen is better than Norton.
