Anxiety

Anxiety doesn't seem to be something people really notice unless you have/had it. Quite a large proportion of people have it in some form but many ignore it or try to hide it as something else.

I have had anxiety for around 14 years with my worst period having frequent panic attacks and causing me to miss my first year of College. Over the years I have tried many different medications and therapy but found the best way to help overcome is to understand it and your body. I haven't had any tablets or therapy for many years and still do suffer but not to the extent I used to. I can now do most things in life without it coming on although I still get nervous often. I feel once you fully understand it you can control it a lot better and know where your limits are. I still do avoid certain things and people struggle to come to terms with it but I have improved hugely from the start of it.

I've suffered anxiety and panic attacks for years, they were much better for quite some time (prob 5-6 years) but in the last year its become really quite bad to the point where it affects daily life, no-one really knows as i cover it well and tend to make excuses to leave a situation where i'm really anxious and panicy. It would be nice to be "normal" again :(

I didn't read whole thread but...

Doctor won't help you. The only meds a Doc will likely prescribe is antidepressants which will do nothing but line his/her pocket. The only meds that will work are benzodiazepines which are highly addictive and you will be in a whole world of pain and anxiety getting off them. My ex spent 90 grand in the Priory to get off them.

Take up Yoga - asanas (physical stuff) and pranayama (breathing stuff). Cut out caffeine, fags, alcohol and do some aerobic exercise like swimming, push biking etc.

CBT / counselling...well, might work for some but personally I think your time would be better spent doing the above.

I can whole heartily agree with this, we build hospitals and surgeries, pharmacies contribute towards the build cost and where the doctors are prescription happy the 'bidding' for the pharmacy is crazy money, sometimes the 'contribution' builds the surgery and the pharmacy on it's own, in areas where holistic therapies are more common it's a struggle to get a pharmacy to sign up let alone 'contribute'.

At the end of the day there is a lot of people who suffer greatly with this condition, myself included.

Lifestyle, upbringing, choices, drugs, experiences, abuse, neglect.

Its like oil and water dont mix until another ingredient is added.

As for the doctor debate , they only get paid buy how many patients they see not by how many prescriptions they prescribe.

There is an old Chinese proverb

Never judge a man till you have walked a mile in his shoes.

Three levellers for good metal well being:

Alcohol etc - everyone needs to let their hair down and a great way of doing that is with a few drinks.

Exercise - few things are as liberating as accomplishing goals and seeing self-improvement.

Sex - the ultimate form of affirmation.

Do these three things a lot and the world is your oyster.

By your musings I should be a certified grade A looney tune.

Oh wait.... :D

Helpful advice. Go back to reading about processor speeds

You are new around here obviously if you think I simply read about processor speeds.

Anyway, telling people that their Doctor cannot or will not help them is not good or helpful advice, it is pretty irresponsible in fact. Not all GP's will simply prescribe an antidepressant, and most will offer a range of help and advice to their patients, including but not limited to CBT and Therapy. And saying that the average GP is putting their financial benefit above that of the Heath of their patient is again irresponsible and balderdash.

Saying your Doc wont help is complete and utter rubbish, I understand not ever one has good things to say about their local GP ( and partly their fault they dont go elsewhere) but overall it's rubbish.

Ive had Anxiety since very early teens and I'm now in my early 30's, about the worst thing I did was try and "cope", and manage it. Best thing I did was first, tell my parents something wasnt right, then getting to the Gp, who was MASSIVLY important to helping turn things around.
Not only do you learn to talk about it, which in itself can help, as you kind of learn how to talk about it openly, this takes time and take some practise even to learn the right vocabulary to explain it to others, but then you realise your not alone.
Once talking to the doc, i was put on Anit Depressants, some have said this is a stupid thing to do, it absolutly is not, and anxiety and depression can go hand in hand.
This doesnt mean you are depressed, but daily medicines like even an ultra low dosage of Citropalin, can make real change.
As well as this he got me in contact and set up with a councelor and we started CBT for a few months, this helped me, it wasnt life changing, in fact theirs NOTHING that treats it over night. But learning how you brain is wired, and working backwards to understand it can be very interesting and can help a lot.
Im not cured from it, and doubt I ever will, but I know a few things, like, one, it's not that strange, and perhaps its just who I am.
Just to add, because CBT didn't change my life it is very very successful for many, so worth a go.
Also, like it or not, but at some point you going to have to throw yourself into some of the things that can trigger you off, its horrible but its one of the best things you can do.

[wall of text]....

Im not cured from it, and doubt I ever will,

Did said doc have a nice smiley Paxil mug on his desk courtesy of Smithkline as he wrote your prescription?

What??

Call me out for what? Disagreeing with someone who thinks GPs are useless and just in it for the pharmaceutical companies bribes?....

Castiel you are absolutely correct in your statement. Doctors/ GPs are there to help. Unfortunately they are people just like everyone so are prone to errors in judgement, which are amplified because of their position.
I was diagnosed in 2009 with depression and anxiety. At first my doctor missed the severity of my situation which made me feel dreadful, however in hindsight I played down how bad I was actually feeling and therefore made his job in making a diagnosis difficult.

If anyone is feeling anxious or depressed please go to your doctor/GP and be honest. There is no weakness in saying how low/worried/depressed/stressed you feel and they would have heard it many times before. Just don't cover your feelings up in fear of what they may think, it doesn't help the doctor or yourself in the long term.

Why then people in this thread who have seen their doc and offered the hobsons choice of pharma drugs - antidepressants, benzos or CBT are still not cured?

Get of your butts and solve the problem yourselves. Not rocket science
