Any advantage to sata SSDs vs NVME?

Hi all,

1st post on this account, I’m sure I had an account years back but I’ll be damned if i can recall the details i used.

Anyway I’ve been thinking of adding some extra storage (currently have a 2tb nvme drive). I’m wondering if there’s any advantage to using sata ssds over nvme as the prices for decent ones don’t seem to differ that much?

I know nvme is much, much faster but will run hotter. Are there use cases where sata drives would be your preferred option?

At the moment I use it for gaming and some coding work (noting too serious right now as I’m retraining into a tech role currently).

Fair enough, i was struggling to think of an advantage other than a small cost advantage.

I have a spare nvme slot, although iirc it will only run with limted pcie lanes due to using the main slot but still faster than sata 3. Plus no cable to manage, which is always a bonus.

Thanks all, i reckon ill just get a relatively cheap nvme for my second slot. While it doesn’t make much design in games yet, i think that will start to change soon(ish)9 with direct storage.

I just wasn’t sure if sata drives were more reliable or something but it would appear not.
