Any advantages of setting FPS limit?

Silly question but is it the same if I set my monitor to say 100hz in the control panel and enable vsync? Or is it best to use something like rivatuner?

Vsync will also limit the fps to your Hz. But it introduce mouse lag in some games I find. I usually have it off with an FPS cap set in riva tuner.
