I have mine disabled at the moment, and i seem to recall someone recommending that be done, but i cant find the post on the forums again.

There are times where i will spontaneously want SMART info and dont wanna have to reboot into the BIOS to enable it. So if i leave it on all the time, will this affect the performance/life of the HDDs?

Supposed to warn you of imminent failure, well, don’t know whether if it ever does  but what you will find is that most people don’t have the option to disable it.

You should leave it enabled, it won't harm performance. You can disable SMART reproting on the drive itself using a manufacturers utility, or in the mobbo's BIOS to prevent it reporting the SMART status at boot. If the drive is having problems you get a warning at boot time and I can see no reason to disable that.
