I do a little bit of art. I don't draw as much as I should (I just tend to draw what I need to submit for my uni coursework). My degree is digital visual effects, and while it is computer-based a sound grounding in traditional art is definitely a good starting point.

The pencils I use are Derwent ones. Not too expensive, got a set from 9B - 2H for about 7 quid. They do the job, and if I lose them / use them up it's not too much of a stretch to fork our for some more.

Some of my sketches:

Do they make that much difference? Ive always bought pencils from art shops, cant remember what they were now.. but i cant imagine the pencil improves your skill.. ;)

^^ he has reminded me, ive had some Derwent ones.. they were ok..

I think this is the last thing i drew.. and used Derwent.

Best just to try a few, depending on how you draw you may favour one over the other. Faber Castell are good, though personally I prefer Derwent.

You can if you read the right books, its not a born talent like most folk seem to think, its a skill anyone can learn and be good at.

If you have any further info on this could you post links? Or if that's a bit too off topic maybe contact me on MSN? I'd really appreciate it :)

Yeah I use Derwent pencils aswel for some of my sketches, but lately I've been using biro for sketches. I find it to have better effects(crosshatch shading 4tw).
I don't really see the difference in Faber Castell(sp?) and Derwent infact any well known brands, all the same to me.

There's the undeniable fact that some people are born better drawers. But with practice, practice, practice, anyone who can hold a pencil to paper can learn to draw well.

I'd also suggest that people don't think that a book will teach them to draw well. Just draw stuff. Take a sketch book with you and draw stuff everywhere. You don't need a book.

Some people draw better than others because they see things differently, others need to learn how to see things properly, once you learn to see you're drawing skills improve dramatically.

Quite possibly. However, artistic "ability", "eye" or whatever you want to call it does manifest itself from a very young age.

Well if your drawings are like a 5 year old then the best beginner book Ive read is called Drawing on the right side of the brain by Betty Edwards.

Then after your done with that I would recommend The Natural Way to Draw by Kimon Nicolaides

Then if you can find them get all the books by Andrew Loomis.

But after reading Betty Edwards book your drawing skills will change dramatically and by the end of the book you should be able to draw someones face realistically.

I think a lot of it is to do with people not looking enough, when i sit with people who draw they will look at an object and memorise an HUGE amount of it.

When i draw ilook up over and over again and do a tiny amount at a time.

Drawing is like many other skills and abilities, most of which with enough practice and effort you can become competent at. However, to move beyond that where you have a real flair and something extra special, is something you either have or you don't.
