Hi all,

Planning a week away and looking to rent a "premium" spec car through Thrifty. Had a quick look around their compound today and they have a few 320's with fairly decent options on them.

We originally fancied a M3/M4 but the 2 up rear seats are a problem as we have three kids. They've offered me a 320 auto for £295 for nine days which is pretty damn good price wise. When we get back the kids are off to Nanna's and the wife and I are getting a M4 cabby for a cheeky weekend away :-)

Holiday house is circa 3 hours away so; 320, is the auto box any good or am I going to be constantly wishing I opted for the manual?

Or, X3 similar options but £50 quid more and just. Urghhh. Tractor.

BMW's new auto boxes are excellent by all accounts. :)

Aye, the only automatic reference point I have is a 2015 M5 which I believe is a DCT affair. I've always had manual boxes as I love the involvement you get from the drive however, a three hour shunt to the Cotswolds with three teasy kids in the back makes me look towards comfort and ease!

I rented exactly this car for a trip around Switzerland a few months ago. It was absolutely fine. Not very premium (its only classified a full size in Germany) but comfortable enough and very frugal.

There is absolutely no reason to opt for the manual.

It's a good price though, UK hire is normally a ripoff and abroad I generally pay about £30 a day for this class of car.

What company did you rent from in Switzerland/Germany? I'm looking at doing a similar trip.

Sixt. It was enormously cheaper to rent from Stuttgart Airport and drive down than it was to rent in Switzerland itself. Nice drive, too.

Select the LDW insurance with the highest excess (900 euro?) and then use third party excess insurance for the best price. Careful, as the Sixt price as standard in Germany includes *no* LDW.

Thanks for the replies guys, booked it online today. You can pay a small fee and upgrade the car on the day apparently if there's anything on the forecourt you like the look of.

Don't do this until you are sure they have your booked car class as the upgrade is generally free if they don't.

Roger that, thanks mate.

Such a shame that we have three kids (that sounds awful!) as I really would have liked the M4 for the entire week. A long weekend in September will have to suffice. Your photo from Switzerland is epic btw. A few years back we toured through the Alps and the scenery was just breathtaking.
