Hey,

I'm looking to become a CAD technician, ad wondered if anybody here is one or if anybody knows how i would go about becoming one ?

i'm gonna start ringing around tomorrow for apprenticeships but any info and help would be great.

James

Part of my current apprenticeship will be to do a course on CAD - there are a few courses at colleges, it's just a matter of looking around

I'll be able to tell you tommorow when I get in work as all the details are there - however you need to think about how far you want to go in CAD work. There are quite a few types of CAD I believe (I.e. 2D, 3D etc.)

i can do 2D CAD, its not really that hard. Just need to pay attention to detail and draw exactly how it is designed/built, and accurate to the nano-meter.

The skill comes in knowing the field, not just the program.

If 2d cad is done properly its a little more complicated than 'just drawing', theres specific 'standards' that have to be followed when producing plans, these can go all the way down to the lines used for dimensions, it doesn't help when they differ slightly depending on field.

then theres 3d cad (my area although I've covered 2d too) which is a completely differnet ball game to 2d.

I know all about it, i have done working drawings in architectural field for over 2 years so i know full well of the "standard."

Well I do more of the 3D side of modeling buildings. But to do that I need a very good understanding of 2D CAD work and as peeps have said its more than just drawing. You have to understand 2D plans (if ** going for architectural that is) and all the standards etc.

you might but the op might not, implying something is a case of simply being accurate is a slight understatement wouldn't you say, especially considering you work in the field
