Hi all,

I'm trying to figure out a way of putting some audio into my Trabant which has no stereo, speakers or any sort of wiring for any.

Of course I could chuck all the wiring in and screw some speakers to the doors but I dont really fancy that.

I have fitted some Mk1 MX5 seats which have speakers in the headrests so I was thinking about using somesort of standalone amp with it's own battery and a 3.5mm jack input but I'm not sure such a thing exists?

The other option is a bluetooth speaker but as yet I've been unsuccessful in finding something appropriate (volume and quality).

Here is the beast we're working with.

Any and all suggestions are welcome.

Cheers

I had a similar situation - there's room for a 4x10 single speaker in the dash, and a 6" single speaker in the rear parcel shelf.

I got these:

And put them under my seats - I put a bit of ply under the carpet and bolted them to it so they don't move. They actually sound pretty fair. I actually bought a second pair but I've decided to actually put speakers in the rear parcel shelf as there are convenient holes for them.

My stereo is just in a plastic mount under the dash. It's where the stereo would have been if it had had one fitted from factory. Looks fine :)

I did originally have in in the glovebox but it was just a pain in the bum. However people do do some quite nice builds with a flat face, carpeted, so all you see when you open the glovebox is the fascia. Looks good if you want to keep it 100% original from outside.

If you've got room in the doors you could put them there, but then you have to run the wiring and it's not like on a modern car where you have molex connectors. I see people drill and put in bits of tube to protect the wiring when the doors open, but I didn't want to do anything too drastic. Same with the rear, I could cut the metal parcel shelf and put in larger speakers, but I'd much rather not go messing with part of the chassis, so I've just got speakers that fit the 10cm holes.

For the headrest speaker all you need is to wire up your HU and find somewhere to stash it. Me personally I used a BT speaker for a bit but it's just not as simple as wiring a stereo and then using that. Modern, mechless units are very small and easy to hide away if you wish. I think mine's about 10-12cm deep? I couldn't have put a full size unit where mine is easily.

You could maybe get a head unit with a remote and hide it somewhere if you prefer? Changing media would be a pain, but could work.
