Any CNC Machinists On Here??

When you said 30 miles outside Glasgow mate I was thinking you might be closer to Livingston. I've seen quite a few CNC posts advertised for the area. I believe Houston industrial estate has a few places currently recruiting.

Would be worth looking at Colleges and Uni's too. They might be hiring workshop technicians or machine operators. If you got in there you'd be sorted :)

when i was living in glasgow i did a 30 mile radius search, very few jobs came up, the odd one in edinburgh but that is too far. Just now im on the west coast in ayrshire, so my search goes as far as glasgow. Even when i search cnc in scotland, nothing comes up except cnc brake press operators. There is a job going in Airsdrie, my cv is already in for that, never heard back. I think there is too many people all looking for cnc jobs. I have seen one or 2 jobs at uni's last year, they are looking for people that can do everything lol, i did not think it was worth applying.

indeed is the best search site i have found, as you can see, scotland is pants.
If i have to relocate it may as well be somewhere i will have a future. That is not in Scotland

Totally worth applying if you see anything going in a Uni. Don't worry about the job description or the details too much. It might end up being there is no one out there who has everything they're looking for. If you're enthusiastic and have experience you'd be in with a shout.

That link is pretty bleak.. not much there.

I know you said Edinburgh is a bit far but this looks promising. If you were thinking of relocating 100 miles or so away wouldn't be too bad lol:

You're right about aerospace and automotive work being down south. I work now as a 5-axis CNC programmer in the aerospace industry using Catia V4 (legacy work) and Catia V5. I used to run machines and appreciate it is hard to move around when you only have experience on a limited amount of controls. That said the basics are the basics and you should pick up other controls relatively easily. I'm getting to learn how to program / run a Siemens 840D SL control soon which should be interesting. It's far more capable than the Osai 10 series in our current machines, or so I've been told.

Matchtech has been mentioned and I'll throw in another agency and that is Carbon60. A lot of contractors at my place come in through them. Skilled machinists must be on around £11 - £12 an hour at a guess.

You will probably find the automotive industry pay a little more, especially F1 companies.

One thing I've noticed where I work is the requirement for machinists to be skilled has almost been totally removed. We still employ them but much more emphasis is on engineering making things as automated and fool proof as possible. I haven't heard that we're recruiting at the moment I'm afraid. I think it'd be worth trying an agency and seeing what offers they can get you.

Ever thought of trying to start your own business? Theres always people wanting cnc work done.

Meh, I was hoping this thread was going to be about people with a CNC machine.

I was wondering how much it would cost to get something milled, but I need a bloke in a shed rather than Boeing

m3csl2004, I cant use cam software unfortunately

Bluntwrapped, The uni jobs i seen want someone who can do cnc milling and turning, program offline using software, must have certain qualifications blah blah blah. There is a very long winded application process, i called one up last year, the guy was unhelpful, i told him my skills and qualifications, i asked am i wasting my time going through the lengthy application process, he could not give me any guidance, he told me to apply and see, i never bothered. I dont see the point in applying for Scotland, ill face this problem again, i need to make the move now and England seems the best bet for now.

Gixer, Interesting what you say, sound like your in a good job at the moment. ANother thing that does not go in my favour is its mostly 3 axis experience i have, a lot of places asking for this too. I have noted to apply to those 2 agencies, the more i get my cv to the better.
