A friend of mine found the below coin in their garden the other day and she's asked me to help her find out what it is and more importantly if it's worth anything.

It looks Roman to me but what do I know. Does anybody here know anything about coins or where she can take it to find out what it is and how much it might be worth?

It looks very similar to the ones they sell at the Roman Baths in Bath although they are silver not gold.

so far I have its a Byzantine 40 nummi follis coin, Constantinople minted, reading up on it it appears there are a great many fakes so it may not be real after all especially since that is so clean.

Ah amazing find, many moons ago when the Romans ruled Britain and Chester was more than just the filming ground for Hollyoaks, the IXth Legion conquered Britain and then where ordered to both defend the fertile lands of the South and attack the heathens to the North. Under the command of Caesius Nasica they successfully gained and maintained control of our shores. For many hundreds of years there was a story that Caesius had ordered a special coin to be minted, a coin of such value it could be traded not only for good and services but in exchange for a persons life. Such coins where held only by select Centurions, and only those that had proven to be of great value in battle. The story goes that these coins where of such value that Centurions had decided to keep these coins safe, they held them in their sandals. As knowledge of these coins spread, commoners would seek out these Centurions and attempt to grab the coin, they would grab at the sandals and then even start pulling their leg.......just like I'm pulling yours. #nice_coin_tho_bro
