Any dates for Doom 4?

CD's?

I remember when demo's came on tapes, ah the good old days ..... feeling old now:(
So you forget the times where games used to be BASIC code that you had to type in and run? You young whipper-snappers and your fangdangled tapes :p

In conversation with someone in work I mentioned my trusty old Commodore 64 to which I recieved a puzzled look and then had to explain the concept involving tapes to which he replied "O YOU MEAN LIKE THOSE OLD SPECTRAL THINGS". Sigh, not even 30 yet and I feel like a dinosaur!

I believe they're waiting on their team of scriptwriters to finish up - complicated storylines take some time to produce.

There's a joke in there somewhere

In all honestly after Doom3, i don't give a crap if there's a Doom4. D3 was very pretty but was one of the worst games i have ever played. Dull boring corridors. Fun House style scares trying to make you jump. Respawning enemies that come out of nowhere despite you clearing and securing an area (very cheap).

Then came the excellent excellent underground of Mars and Hell levels. But no, after 2-3 levels, you get thrown back into dull boring corridors again, not only that, but they are dull boring corridors that you already done!!!!

I prefered the corridors to hell. For me where the game didn't quite work as well as I had hoped was that they threw in arcade elements in to the game. The problem was that visually the title appeared to set the scene for precisely the opposite.

It was a bit of a mis-match.

Id Software has said Doom 4 is a direct sequel to 1 & 2, and it's as if Doom 3 never existed. It's back to the Serious-Sam style mass shooter and not dark decrepit corridors with monster closets. They seem to have finally got the memo that Doom is famous for its insane shooter gameplay and not its plot. (the stupid morons...)

The worst thing they did was try to work around the plot of Doom for 3 and not its gameplay. I don't know about you but Doom is literally the last game I'd pick for a modern day sequel based on story. I still have no idea why Id made Doom 3 the way it is.

Doom 3 was a remake of the original Doom "story" in there new game engine.

Seemed they just wanted to "wow" everyone with the technology than the actual gameplay. I remember the trailers showing ragdoll physics from rocket impacts then when the game came out you had the bs "burn away" efect when you killed an enemy instead of ragdoll.

Carmack nowadays just seems more interested in tech than stuff that actually makes a good addition to gameplay, doom 3 is a good example of that. A game (and engine) that had tons of hype but really both failed to deliver. Barely any other games even made use of the doom engine and considering the massive uptake the quake 3 engine had from third partys it says a lot about how well received it was.

Personally i think id in the grand scheme of things have fallen vastly in terms of their relevance. For multiplayer all they can do is rehash the same tired crap thats been around over a decade now, they just seem to want to pander to their dwindling fanbase and not change the mp in their games too much so people can just continue as they played in the last game and to hell with any newcomers.

when Doom3 was out it was epic graphic-wise, would have loved more zombie action due to the tight corridors and limited ammo. it still gave you a lot of jumps though.

Got a quote for that? I follow Doom news, and the only thing I have heard is that it's not a direct sequel to doom 3, and not a reboot of the franchise. Behind that, we don't know. I'm certain that Doom 3 will be part of the game's continuity.

Maybe because it made a great game?
I guess the thought process went something like this: They wanted high quality graphics, and knew that computers of that time weren't up to handling many many monsters on screen at once at that quality, so took a different approach - of cramped corridors, and artificial but effective scares. (Which is just like the original doom).

Plus, having 'story' and 'plot' in games was becoming a big thing, and they wanted to do the same. I think they did a really good job. The snippets of plot you found in audio logs, the atmosphere of the demon-infested station, the taunting from the bad guy - it made it a great game.
My favourite with the possible exception of Serious Sam :), since the original Half-life (much better than HL2).

Doesnt seem to have been demo'd at Quake Con, but wiki suggests it will be out before Rage, anyone have anymore info on it? Will we see it early next year?

I'm sure this is a mistake. In a discussion about Doom 4, the CEO of id said:
Doom 4 is heading for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC and should hit all at the same time.

"That's absolutely what we're thinking," he said. "That would certainly be the hope." Rage is id's next major release and that's for all platforms as well, due out September 2011.

Wonder how compromised the pc version will be because of it being a multi platform title. Texture fidelity and model detail bound to be handicapped by a large amount.

I was thinking that until john carmack was quoted "doom 4 will have 3 times better graphics than rage" which already looks rather nice anyway.

Bit confused with this - Carmack always been far more interested in graphic engines than the games themselves - pretty much the reason why he still does what he does - this isnt a new thing since Doom 3.

I agree they are a shadow of their former selves, but I just take that due to self-indulgence and the need to not prove themselves...

Full quote is this:

On August 1, 2008, John Carmack, the co-founder and technical director of id Software said that Doom 4 will look three times better than Rage does, as it runs at 30 frames-per-second, rather than 60 that Rage targets.

30fps :(
