Any DJ's here?

I've just started.

no way does it cost like 2 grand, maybe if you're professional. you can buy software, mixer, headphones at a decent quality for £250.

I'm yet to buy some decks/mixer but I'm messing around with VDJ until I can afford it.
It really depends on how you want to DJ. You like the digital route which is much cheaper than the turntable route. I'm trying to do both and it's costing me a stupid amount. But that's also my fault as I try to buy the best. I still don't have a mixer and I need to buy some new needles which is going to make a massive hole in my wallet. In fact I won't have a wallet at the end of it lol.

i know this is blasphemy, but i prefer my str8-150's to techy 1210's
BURN IN HELL! Nah I have 1210 mk5s and my cousin who got me started in this hobby says while he likes my decks he doesn't think they are that better than his... which I forget what they are.

It's all about options. Everyone in the thread is going to suggest something and tell you what they started off with. You just have to make the choice on how much you want to put towards it and what aspect you think you might enjoy the most. I'm not really a fan of beatmatching but I love the feel of vinyl!

Just bought my first lot of vinyl yesterday actually. Looking forward to receiving them on Monday.

Oh God no, please not the 'you're not a DJ if you use a laptop' debate.

Granted you are technically not a 'disc jockey', but you are still there in the same capacity as a DJ/performer.

Have to say I much enjoy watching DJ's who don't use CDJs/turntables now, much rather see Richie Hawtin rock the back out of a club with a 4 deck Traktor setup. Theres sooooo much more creativity and variation, its brilliant.

The secret to becoming a dj and playing at clubs all over the world is simple!

Make tracks, good tracks that other big djs play!

The other way round is a lot harder!

Definately true. Make music, and good music at that and the gigs will follow.

Trying to get somewere by just DJ'ing will get you nowhere imo, you have to be a good producer these days knocking out tunes that all the big boys play regularly to get proper gigs.

What I mean was, it's not as expensive as he said to start, when you're begining novice stuff then it might start amounting.

This - Learning to beat match is a piece of peace after a few years at it - using technology adds a whole new dimention to it! Also, just because you're using a laptop doesn't mean you aren't beat matching - My setup is traktor pro on a pc laptop using 2 cdj 800's to beat match or 2 1210's and then a controller to control the stuff on traktor such as the loops, fx and tune selection! Makes it more than just a dj playing tunes on vinyl or cd ;)
