Any DJ's?

Serato scratch live.

What about Traktor?

I'm very interested in this thread as I want to get into some sort of music stuff but want to get the most I can from everything. So I'm trying to work out what I should buy. At the moment I'm looking at a Mixer which supports midi and maybe a controller. But then I think "what if I enjoy it or don't?". Do I buy a couple of decks and something like Serato or do I buy a couple of CDJ 400s. I can't say I care for scratching that much but mixing is a sure thing.

But then I think about space. There is no way I have enough space in my room for a couple of decks. Which makes me a sad panda. :(

I can't remember the last time i saw a DJ using vinyl in a club, everywhere i go now they just have their laptops etc

If you want to learn how to mix, get yourself a pair of direct dirve tunrtables. Something like Stanton are a good mid brand and add in a cheapish mixer, Newmark or something. Get a handfull of vinyl and get practising!! Going down this route you can also go with the time coded vinyl.

If you hope to get onto the club/pub scene then as many have said you'll need to know your way around CDJ's and specially CDJ1000's. Theyre pricey but they are also incredibly good.

As mentioned above a lot of "clubs" and pubs dont use vinyl anymore but they are also the sort of place that are happy with a hashed up mix and the half cut punters are only there to drink and listen to loud music. Cant comment on the higher end clubs, sadly Im not that good, but I imagine they all still have multiple turntables in the booth.

I really don't get this.

Do you dismiss engineers that use CAD software instead of drawing by hand?
Do you dismiss musicians that use PCs instead of instruments?
Do you dismiss racing drivers that drive cars with traction control and ABS?

Why is using CD decks not 'proper' ?

In total agreement here.

I went from Traktor (Internal Mixer w/ Controller) -> CDJ1000MK3's - > Traktor Scratch Pro w/ CDJs.

I 'can' use TTs fine since learning to mix with CDJs, but seriously don't like vinyl at all.

So defo would advise to get CDJs to start with instead of TTs, so much more fun

Would you mind expanding on this please? I have a pair of CDJ400s and a DJM400 mixer. How do you hook it up and what benefit does connecting it all up to Traktor give you?

Check out all the info on Native Instrument's website for Traktor Scratch.

Basically, I don't have to burn cd's any more since I'm using timecoded cd's to control Traktor. As well as you get all the benefits of Traktor's effects/looping features etc that you can't do with just CDJs

Your CDJ400s are perfect for Traktor/Serato too, you can just hook up the usb ports to your laptop and they operate in HID mode to control the decks :)

Yup, most of my wages been spent on dj gear at the moment, bought an A&H Xone42 Mixer / Macbook Pro / NI Audio 4 DJ / 500GB External HDD / Akai LPD8 Midi Controller all recently for transition to Traktor, fairly skint now ;)

surely that just adds needing a stable laptop to the things he would need though ?

he might aswell just play off cds/usb sticks imo. surely the 400s have good effects and looping stuff already too ?

Yeah good point, but dj'in aint cheap...

There's nothing wrong with playing off just CDJs (in fact, I still prefer just to use my CDJ1000s with cd's instead of hooked up to Traktor/Serator), but I've just got to the point where I'm fed up of burning cd's and looking through my cd wallet and wondering what to play next, whereas with Traktor I can setup playlists and sort the collection by genre/bpm etc to find tracks a lot easier.

The CDJ1000s do support USB sticks as well so you dont have to use CD's.

You can also create your own folders on them to organise your music more

CDJ800/CDJ1000s don't. The new CDJ900/CDJ2000s do though (although, don't think they're even available yet...).

Ooops my bad, thinking of the 400s then. The 1000s do support SD cards though so no need for CDs.

The CDJ2000s have this new feature where you can link two of them up together and play music off only one that has a USB/SD cards plugged in so no need for 2 CDs or 2 usb sticks.

I shudder to think how much the CDJ2000s will cost when released considering the price of 1000s atm.

The 1000's don't support SD cards for storing music on, just for loops and cues wasnt it?

Pretty sure it can be used for storage.

The 2000s arent much different to the 1000s apart from the 2000s have a lcd screen, more hot cues and also a faster way of skiping through a track (like picking a needle up on a record).

I use the Vestax VCI-300 with Serato Itch. More practical than vinyl and though it obviously has a different feel you have as much control so you can scratch away; far more responsive than CDJ's or other controllers.
Cost me £400~ used, but I'd have happily paid the £600 - bargain. Don't see myself moving to another setup unless they bring out a new one with more functions.
