Hi all...built a new pc last week using the following parts

e6600
ds3
2x1gig giel 6400
hyper 580w psu
ati x1900xt
audigy 2 zs

This board wouldnt install xp with both sticks of ram in, I had to take one out (no biggie) but upon the fresh install and after all drivers where loaded I put the other stick of ram in and on reboot it wouldnt pick up the video card. I had to scan for hardware changes to correct this but then another reboot would do the same like catch 22. In the end I reinstalled xp clean (it only takes about 15 mins tops) and then this seemed to cure the issue.

However my sound card was now doing the same. If I took 1 stick of ram out it boots fine (yes tried swapping them over too) but put both in and the sound card was lost until I canned for hardware changes.

I eventually memtested the ram and it showed thousands of errors so I rma'd it. Now ...I have the new ram here, its memtested fine but still the problem persists with the sound card in dual mode.

Anyone know of this problem or have any ideas?

At this point I would normally believe it to be a soundcard issue but because it happened the same with the videocard I'm begining to wonder if it's a board issue?

ps the ram has also been tested in both the yellow and purple slots!!

It could be a motherboard problem. I would test your RAM again and see if there are any errors now. Somehow the board may have damaged the old ram because of it's own errors.

You don't mention if you were overclocked at all or what voltage you are running the RAM at. Some BIOS versions don't pick up the SPD on the GeIL correctly and you have to set 2.1V manually. Also some GeIL RAM has the SPD incorrectly programmed and the timings have to be set manually.

No-one else has reported issues on the PCIe card slots but you could also check that if you are overclocked that the PCIe clocks are locked to 100 or 101 at the most.

sorry about that....yes giel mem is set to 2.1v and timings are currently slack 5/5/5/15.

cpu is clocked at 3.2 at the mo but this issue also happens at stock.

pci e slot is also locked at 100.

the point is though..with this also happening with the video card first time round im wondering if its a common board issue...maybe irq settings or something.

And why is the issue resolved when the board is run in single channel mode.....wierd huh?

Can I ask how you know the GeIL is set at 2.1V?

You have a specific section for GeIL memory? Mine just says Memory [+x.xx Volts]

So, in theory, if you are running the latest BIOS that correctly identifes the GeIL from SPD settings then could you be running the RAM at 2.4V?

But, if you have a specific section for GeIL memory, then ignore that possibility.

I'm sorry...that part about the geil section was just my dry sense of humour...i have set the memory voltage to +0.03 (like yours) and easy tune confirms that it is setup at 2.1v.

:)

I have emailed gigabyte support with this problem as o/c'ers support have no idea.

i firmly believe this is a board issue but lets see if gigabyte have any idea...thats if they reply lol

Ive had a number of issues with mine

RAM
Firstly, make sure that the RAM is actually in the board 100% perfectly. I know that with mine I can power off and on ( Fiddling the ram in place in between ) for ages before I get mine to work... Just 2 days ago for example, I swapped my Corsair for Geil, and it took me just on an hour to actually get it to do anything other than bleep like crazy at me.
I did this for one stick until it was good, then I did it with the second... Im looking at getting another 2 sticks too, so thats going to be fun isnt it?

PCI Cards
Now, this is one that I am really peeved at, and its well annopying.

First off, my XFI Simply wont work in any of the slots.

I want to use an extra IDE Card as I want to use 4 DVDRW Drives as I have been doing in my AMDs and originally I had a Maxtor 40GB for my download drive... If I have the drive connected to the IDE Card ( ITE8212 ) it wont go into the BIOS? - The Drive is now gone and I have used a raptor36 and thats fine now, but... Back to the SoundCard...

The XFI Works fine, but only if I have my old TV Card in the slot below it???

So, as it is now, the bottom has the IDE Card, the middle has a TV Card and the top is the XFI

I have done many tests on these and no matter how I have them, the XFI MUST be right above the TV Card, and any other and it wont work.

Actually it will work, and it works just fine, butas soon as I restart the PC, it failed to find the card needing me to reinstall the drivers, which then of course need me to restert the PC to get them in properly, and what happens when it restarts?

Anyway, thats how I have it now... XFI in the top but without the TV Card ( Old Mercury thing ) it wont work at all?

Any other issues I dont like about this board?

Well, it wont run NFSU2 properly without crashing every 2 minutes. It wont install Most Wanted or Carbon without crashing the register program either... The latter 2 games seem to run ok after that however, but U2 is hell to play for a while because of it.

The annoying thing is that I have 2 of these boards and I really do sometimes regret getting them... Its only that the ridiculous overclocking I have had out of the CPUs in these boards that I like them. ( 4.3Ghz on a P4 / Maxed out at 4.7 due to heat and 3.0Ghz on the conroe and thats only because I have not tried any further ... Yet )

Had a reply from gigabyte support today saying basically they have no idea.

i guess all I can do is buy another one and if its ok then this one must be broken.

Umm, trying to find out how to change the geil timings manually on the DS3, anyone help?

This is in all the stickies!

On the main BIOS Screen press CTRL+F1. The screen will flicker and you will have some extra options in the MB Intelligent Tweaker menu.
