Any electricians in the house?

All this said and as much as i would just do this and not even think about it, and employing someone to do this and getting it certed is a total waste of money, it is a bit worrying that the OP had to ask at all. Maybe he shouldnt do it :p

i asked because i wanted to know what it would cost to have the work carried out by an electrician.

Tbh you need to decide if you want it done cheap or want it done right.

If cheap then just diy or handyman

If right then need to get a spark or 3 in to quote, cant really do that without seeing the state of the installation and any other works needed before this can be done.

Doing things properly the rest of the installation may need to be brought upto current regs in some respects before and additional works can be done.

2 socket extension lead running off an rcd plug and lights run from this with 3A fuse is probably the cheapest option lol, wire strip light in garage to plug top ftw :)

Ps. cable should be buried 600mm deep afai remember, but cat wire if vehicle access needed would need to be 3.5m high or 2.5m without vehicle access, which is pretty high etc

Also due to the fact it's outside your equipotential zone you will need to at the very least RCD (Or RCBO) the supply to the garage, possibly more depending on your house supply system (TN−S, TN−C−S, TT ..etc), services in the garage and location of garage with surrounding environment !
Lots of poor unprofessional cowboy advice been given here, get a few qualified sparkys to give you some quotes.
It's not as simple as some people seem to think, when you take your power supply outside your equipotential zone more electrical hazards/dangers can be created requiring more in-depth knowledge to render the installation safe and electrically sound!

Why not correct it then?

I'll just pop this in as background reading as I hate to see overhead cabling.

(note, 5th, not 17th)

And mention that putting in a duct is a better idea, in case you either need to upgrade the swa or add in a line to a burglar alarm or whatever.

Or even a network cable or similar (which I would personally run 4 cables unterminated just in case).

Heh, this is probably the only forum where laying in Cat5e to a garage is considered not only a good idea, but such a good idea that more than one may be required :D

Plug in a normal extension lead from kitchen and into garage ;-)

On a serious note, if your not sure how to DIY it then dont bother.

Get 3 quotes from electricians and go from there. I would presume that it would cost in the region of 600-800.

This matters if you are carrying out the installation for somebody else. This is happening on HIS house. No-one is going to check it, ever, or care. It simply doesn't matter, it is so minor.

Just what do you think will happen?

Point is if he sells the house, dodgy wiring doesn't end up killing the next occupant.
