Neuromancer by William Gibson.........
David Eddings does epic stories such as The Belgariad, The Mallorean etc. I loved those books, couldn't put them down.
Magicain (Riftwars) by Raymond E Feist
Memory Sorrow Thorn series by Tad Williams
Eddings - Belgariad followed by Malloreon, very similar but well told. His Sparhawk series were also very good. His newer stuff isn't too hot though as too much of a retread, although Redemption of Althalus is a fun standalone book
^ What he said, don't read Belgarath/Polgara/Riven Codex before the 2 series, or they won't make anywhere near as much sense as you wont have a connection to the characters or events they're talking about
The Silmarillion, if you REALLY like LOTR
At all costs avoid Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy. Dire books. Read Harry Potter if you want that kind of thing. So, so much better.
