I`ve jsut started studying for the Microsoft Exchange 70-284 exam, wading through the Sybex book getting a solid conceptual basis before I mess about :) . I have Exchange installed on 2003 Server and at some point I would like to configure it in such a manner that I can use it to pick up mail, either my own mail (ISP) or would it be feasible to buy a cheap domain name just for messing about with etc?(my guess here is I could have the domain name point to my ISP DNS who in turn could have an MX record point to my mail server?). Any advice on possible scenarios that I should/could/be best trying to configure to give me a basic understanding would be welcomed.

You may need a static IP address if you want direct email sent in, when I last checked think its about a tenner extra a month,

I have a static IP atm but not sure if an additional one would be the way to go and put server in DMZ or NAT it........my first inclination would be to use NAT but not really having thought this through ;) I`d hope someone would advise :)

I kinda thought that, would the rest of my appraisal seem in the ballpark as relates to what I need to do etc?

Yeah pretty much. You don't HAVE to have your ISP hosting your name servers, can be with any hosting company. Then yes, as you said, stick in an MX record pointing to your external IP and forward port 25 to your server.

ah yes of course, thanks mate :)

Or alternatively you could have a 'catch-all' mail account and just get exchange to connect to that via POP or whatever connection maybe.

It's a lot easier than having the mail directly going into Exchange.

yes that sounds a possibility, I had thought that it could be configured in such a way as to do that and then make the mail available to lcients internally as I would like to mimic that scenario if I can, thanks :) , I`m only on chapter 4 but getting to grips with clustering etc

Exchange wouldn't support that, you would need some 3rd party POP3 connector. (unless you're using SBS)

thanks, looks interesting, have you set Exchange up @ home?

No, never got round to it but a friend setup Exchange 2003 at home using his Telewest broadband connection. He had it running for 3 months and said he never had any problems. He was using a spare domain name he had registered with 1 and 1 and he just setup a mx record to point to his telewest asigned ip address.
