Hi Guys,

We're running a very simple Exchange 2007 setup within our small company, however there are 2 parts of it which do not, and never have worked.

1) Public Folders from OWA
2) The Direct File Access thing

Also, we've had an old Exchange 2007 server which basically died, and we rebuilt the setup to a new virtual server, however that old server still appears in the exchange management console etc.

I installed it all myself so I do have fair knowledge of it all, but what I am basically looking for is someone to talk me through sorting these problems?!?! We may be willing to pay a very small token gift to someone to help us sort it all out!

Or...... should we just upgrade our single server to Exchange 2010?

Cheers,

Mal

When you installed your Exchange environment, what was answered to the question about 2000/2003 and 2007 clients?

This will most likely be a problem with the way your public folders are published, could you screenshot your current public folder settings?

2010 is easier to setup and manage IMO, but remember that it isn't as mature, and if you rely on any 3rd party apps to add functionality, they probably won't yet exist for 2010.

Doesn't really matter about your first point paradigm as all that does is ensure a public folders DB is created by default. I fancy that this is when accessing the PFs through OWA and it probably says the error like "Can't access the public folders, contact your admin" or similar.

It matters greatly if you have public folders working on the old style 2000/2003 client method, and the public folder replication isn't working by replicating to OWA.

I've had this issue in a few Exchange 2007/2010 organizations up to now.

Hi guys,

This was a new setup, there was initially no public folder database, but I created one manually in a new storage group. The public folders do work to some extend, I've set one up, and we can access it fine from Outlook.

Outlook 2007, going to folder view and then public folders, although it does take a while to come up.

Also, I really cannot remember anything about a 2000/2003 client question :(

This is the thing. If this is an Exchange 2007 only org with only Outlook 2007 clients, the question is moot. Even if he said "no" to that question, it wouldn't matter as he could just add the public folder to the storage group after install. By answering "Yes" to that question, Exchange just creates the PF database for you.

Which brings me back to my original point, I don't really see what the question has to do with the problem. When I installed Exchange 2007, I answered "No", and just created my own PF database in the first storage group and it all worked nicely.

I would be looking at:

Making sure the old exchange server is removed from ADUC and ADSI.

Is your PF in the same storage group as your mail DB? If not, click on Server Config, find your mail DB, right click, properties and check that the "Client Settings" tab is set to the correct public folder DB (and storage group if different).

Hi Lucero,

I think that may have been the problem! It was pointing to our dead server!!

'm just going through properly removing our old server now, and making sure everything is good. I will report back soon.

Hi chaps. Thanks to both of your help, I have resolved the public folder problem.

I will read up on how to get the direct file access working, and come back if I get any problems. Thank You!!
