I want unlock my iPhone from the 02 network. I rang them up and they said £15 + up to 10days.

I kind of want it unlocked today. I believe that it is possible to do this yourself with a jail broken phone. Is this correct? If so I could do with some pointers.

The phone is a 3GS.
It was bought in 2010

Version 5.1.1 (9b206)
Model mc131B
Serial no: 839399***
Modem firmware 05.16.05

Giff gaff pointed me in the direction of redsnow. I was a little bit concerned to read something about it bricking 3GS. I read that if you phone is manufactured week 34 or later in 2011, then you have an issue. I believe mine is from 2010, so shouldnt be a problem. However it also stated that if digits 3-5 are 134 or later then you should not install 06.15 baseband? Mine is 939 so that appears later, and explanation would be appreciated.

I also came across the greenpoison absinthe, is this better/worse?

As you can probably tell I have no idea what I am doing so any help would be much appreciated!

O2 have always stated that if it's pay and go it'll be £15 and if it's contract it'll be free.

Boo.

in that case OP wait for the Evasi0n jailbreak. looks like a super simple process. unfortunately i cant answer the question on how to unlock as i dont know. back in the days i used to jailbreak there was an option to unlock it at the same time. im not sure if evasi0n will be the same.

What is special about evasion vs redsnow or absinthe?

In answer to earlier questions, I am no longer 02 pay monthly. I switched to Giff gaff when contract expired, but also have a pay as you go sim.

I only want to unlock so that I can put i can test a few alternative network providers (e.g 3 and orange) before I sign up for a new phone. Hence I do not really want to pay £15 to O2 for the unlock, when the phone is only going to be used for a couple more weeks.

To unlock you will need to downgrade your baseband prior to any jailbreak, reinstall ios6.1 with a baseband upgrade prevention tool (which is not available yet), then jailbreak with Evasi0n...: (Assuming you don't have your 5.1.1 blobs)

but this was on pay monthly?

is so then it doesnt matter.

https://www.o2.co.uk/apps/help/help?qid=1&q1=2&route=unlocking&case=Handset Unlocking Form

fill out that form and they'll unlock it.

For the hassle you'd go through it'd be easier and potentially less time by just coughing up the £15 to get it unlocked by O2.

EDIT: Just read you're only gonna be using it for a couple of weeks. Surely buying a crappy PAYG phone for less than a tenner is the cheapest/easiest route?

I don't know O2's policy on out-of-contract unlocks, probably worth filling in the form joelk2 has posted above in either case.

yeah, im in the same boat, fell like a mug for forking out close to a grand to o2 over 2 years and not taking advantage of the o2 unlock.

i think if someone you know has an o2 contract. let them use your iphone for a while and then get them to request an unlock.

otherwise i agree, just unlock it legitimately, you're going to save yourself from a wolrd of trouble later on. I suspect if you keep your baseband downgraded so long, it may potentially give you trouble with later OSes as they wont recognise such an archaic baseband.

I mainly want to unlock the phone so I can test the signal with a couple of alternative networks. The other way I could do this would be with a mobile broadband dongle. I have one from 02, anyone know if the dongle will be "locked" to 02?

the huawei dongles can be unlocked with ease. you install the original non branded firmware which will prompt you for an unlock code which you generate and then you're free.

i think you're best off just asking around neighbours what network theyre on and if they have good coverage?

though I;m not sure if 3g data coverage correlates to normal GSM/voice call coverage.

I got the iphone unlatched today. requested the unlatch via onlien chat in the morning, and got the unl;atch confirmation a few minutes ago. You just need a non-o2 network sim, insert it and then connect the device to itunes. The unlatching takes place via itunes.

Thanks for this post, you inspired me to try again with O2. I rang them up and said I was not happy to pay the £15, and they have unlocked me for free. Huzzah.
