I decided to get back into shooting and have joined a work based shooting club and have my first range shoot at the end of January.

Anyone on here have firearms ? What do you have and if you don't mind me asking, what did you pay for them ?

I am looking to get a .22 rifle for indoor stuff and perhaps a .243 rifle for oudoor range days.

Any recomendations for brands etc ?

I have, use them for vermin control rather than range use though.

Got a .17 HMR & .223 both were about £350-400

Really recommend a Tikka for your .243 or the Steyr Scout is also very good. The CZ-452 is an excellent starting gun in .22lr (had one before my HMR), Sako also make very good but expensive rimfire rifles.

EDIT: avoid Ruger rifles at all costs!

Its abit more complicated when its for a range . Normally have to be a member for 6 months then apply for yer ticket etc. Normally gun/s will be kept at the club . A .22 match rifle is a lot more than a sporting rifle but for a cheapish secondhand one yer looking at about £400ish (Everyone pretty much uses Anshutz )

If you was a sporting gun then it gets trickier still . Need a cabinet and written shooting permission form landowner which may need to be inspected by yer local firearms officer to confirm its suitable for the calibers you have asked for . If its yer first FAC i very much doubt you will get centrefire on yer first application . (although you might for a range gun)

Depending on force they eithier recomend .22 or .177hmr . My local force recomend .177hmr as we have a lot of clay/flint so suffer from rebounds /ricochets .

I like Ruger and Cz as there cheap usable and i dont mind if they pick up a scuff in the field . Atm i have 2 x .22 .177hmr .223 .243 and couple of shotguns. Look at getting a co-terminus ticket (fac and shotgun) as you save a few quid . Hope that helps and if you need any other advice msn/mail in trust .

Ruger 10/22s are great although you will have to basically customize the whole rifle to have it shoot really well. they are basically infinitely customizable.

I also have a cz452 although I don't like the stock very much, or the trigger. Had to float the barrel on it because it was rubbing up on one side of the stock.

Cheers for that.

I should have added that I won't be applying for a FAC unti I have been in a while and hopefully enjoy it.

Are you allowed to keep these weapons in your homes? Do you live in rural areas? I know next to nothing about British gun laws but I'm surprised to see so many gun owners here.

Yes all kept at home . Tbh its a quarter of what i used to have before the handgun ban . They do get abit twichy after 10-12 guns but usually just ask for improved security .

And yes i live in a largeish town .

If you want to have some fun you could get a Sig 552 or a Smith & Wesson MP22-15, should be UK legal.

I have a Beretta Extrema2 and a Marlin lever action cowboy rifle. I use them both to do practical shooting, which is basically running around a number of stages against the clock shooting metal plates. I've shot mini rifle before and didn't really enjoy it that much.

I've had the firearms for a few years now and they are stored in my house in a gun cabinet within a steel lined cupboard. It's a little OTT but gives you bonus points with the firearms officer.

The Ruger 10/22 is a pretty good tool, it's very customisable and is practically bomb proof. I've got a very short barrel on mine along with a trigger job, quick mag release and a red dot sight. It's great for fast work such as mini rifle where accuracy isn't the be-all and end-all. There's nothing more satisfying than blatting a 30 round banana mag down the range in just a few seconds.

I've got a slot on my ticket for a 7.62/.308 rifle and I'm still pondering what to get to fill that slot, possibly a second hand police Steyr. That'll be for outdoor use at a military range.

Ben - Where do you shoot practical with the Marlin? I recently sold my Marlin .357 underlever but I'm planning on replacing it this year. I didn't realise there was any practical stuff with underlevers going on. Does Steve do underlever shoots down at Shield?

I have done a steel challenge at shield using the underlever. The only other times I have been was to shoot shotgun comps. I shoot practical underlever at Christchurch gun club. Every 4th saturday is underleaver.

Don't shoot me for a quick hijacking.....

I haven't fired anything in nearly 12 years since leaving the reserves. DOes anyoine know of any begainners guides on the web re ownership, fac etc etc. Wasn't a bad shot in the day if I don't mind saying and I'd quite like to hone those skills a bit more.

Even fruther back I was one of the last few in the cadets to be allowed to officially fire the SLR in single shot as well as having some fun range days when at Akrotiri. God love the Americans :)

I have no idea where to start in the private world so some pointers would be great. Cheers.

Oh yes, I forgot he was doing steel plate stuff - I've done that with the LBR as well which is quite fun. I must get back down next year for some practical shotgun. I'm also looking for a new shottie for practical, I fancy a pump, something like a Benelli Nova.

Sorry Von, drifting a bit OT...
