They dont take your name either do they for when a job is avail?

Most F&R Services conduct "Joint Recruitment" with neighbouring regions. As far as I'm aware, our lot who joint recruit with Lothian & Borders and Fife will pick their successful candidates from their shortlist but the next time a joint recruitment campaign is carried out, they shortlist from a completely new batch of names. So nope, you don't actually go on any "waiting list" as such. Can't speak for other brigades but iirc that's the way our lot do it.

We've just had a recruitment for wholetime but there's nearly always need for retained
 
How do the recruitment drives work? By that I mean do they wait until there are a few positions open at stations within a certain area then aim to fill them all at same sort of time?
 
It varies. In order to maintain the establishment/manning levels management are "supposed" to take into account retirements and try to ensure that when x amount of FF's retire that a proby back from the training school slots into place in as smooth a transition as possible. In practice however, this hardly ever happens and some watches will run below their watch strength on paper for months. Promotion also has a bearing on it, folk moving up the ladder leave slots behind for FF's to fill either through internal/external transfers or new starts. In 1974 there was a massive intake of recruits and over the past few years and into the near future this had a knock on effect of F&R Services suddenly finding they were about to lose a load of bods.

Again, as far as joint recruitment goes, they will recruit say 10 FF's at a certain point of the year. They might however only require 6 to start and as a result, 6 will go to training school and 4 will be held back until the next recruits course is run.
