in the market for a new reciever when i came across a "PIONEER VSX917V HOME CINEMA RECEIVER", would be using it with my tv/pc/music/dvd/hd dvd/ps3/wii/xb360, it costs in total £199.99 brand new with delivery

is it any good or would i be better off with something different ?

Around that price range you have the Onkyo SR505, they can be had for around £200 if you shop around and are fantastic receivers. There are also the entry level Denon models (AVR-1708 I think) also at around £250.

They should all have plenty of inputs to cater for your different devices, although I'm not aware of any cheap AVR's at the moment that will decode HD audio from sources such as your PS3. I think the Onkyo SR605 is the cheapest that does this.

If you can I would suggest going to a proper Hifi store and trying a demo of several with some different speakers to see which one you like best.
