The web address is http://www.routehiker.org.uk

10 months work on this project lol.

This free software is designed to aid in the creation of routecards for hikers of any type, being in Scouting, DofE or general use. It allows you to calculate the fields that normally would take a long time to calculate by hand. You can create multiple routecards which can be saved and then edited in the future, as well as having printer friendly versions for use on hikes.

I am proud to say Escouts Route Hiker is always being developed, and now incorporates features such as mobile phone browsing, which allow a user to edit their routecards whilst they are away from their computer on a hike. Any additional ideas will be welcomed and there is a very high chance that they will be implemented.

I didn't post this just to have people rip it down. I posted it to notify people of a useful resource. If you're not interested, then why bother posting?

Btw the affiliate links aren't there to make money. They are there for my own statistical purposes.

LOL, I didn't spot the affiliate link!

Talk about shooting yourself in the foot, getting caught red-handed, and having your pants down in denial all at the same time :D

(Though of course it's not to make money since it's your own site :p - but HTTP referrals are a much better way of tracking where people come from (well, not better....but totally invisible to the user))

Here's the FAQ for you:

You may not promote any website or business you have a financial or other interest in, or use the popularity of this community to help build one of your own. The forums are here to allow people to freely share knowledge, not provide them with personal financial gain, or free advertising.
Edit: I posted my post before I checked the FAQ because I'm posting my opinion not a "hey Dons, get over here"...I have enough of them on MSN if I want to poke them at something. Besides I don't even know if this is against the rules...I think it is though

It just annoys me when I work hard to build my sites and reputation - and I abide by the rules of every gold-darned forum of which I'm a member - and other people think they can have it easy.

Especially since the vast majority of your posts over the last few moths have been for help with said site! You'd have thought there's been enough mentions already!

Anyway - I'm sure this is an honest mistake. Just don't try and protest innocence before reading the FAQ, I don't call threads spam for nothing :p :)

Just as well really, as I was about to remove it. We don't generally like affiliate links around here - especially ones that have been 'masked'.

Do what you like TBH.. I don't see any problem in just spreading the news of a free resource.

I don't get any money for it, and I only put an affiliate link from these forums so I could see how many users on overclockers are actually interesting in hiking. The only reason is statistical and that's honest. There's no money involved.

Delete this thread if you must.

Ok I'm not much of a hiker, so I'll stick to comments on the site itself.

The email you send to verify my account went straight into my rather cluttered spam box. I'd do a google search on tips to stop this happening. Here's one I found a while back http://www.seochat.com/c/a/Website-Marketing-Help/Spam-Protection-Ate-My-Newsletter/

Logging in in Firefox was a bit of pain with the popup issue, though I was ok getting in through Yahoo.

On a design note, the Google ads kind of get in the way, I'd put them below the footer.

Thanks Paul.
The popups are needed, so there's not much of an alternative there..

I'll take into account your comments on the ads and the email.
Cheers

Can someone explain this for me:

so no free advertising means no personal web sites for home pages in our profiles or members websites as per sticky?

Made me wonder as well...surely the members list is seen as advertising?

Cheers bud that looks like it could be really useful to me! Im in scouting myself and this may make making routes for the scouts night hikes easier. Real nice idea, are you in scouting yourself?

Rob

Oooh nice.

I do a bit of hiking myself, mostly around the Peak District and Snowdonia. I am going this weekend in fact. This site may come in handy [bookmarks]

Yeah have been in Scouting for about 10 years :)

I used to do DofE, but got fed up with using paper routecards...this progressed to using an excel spreadsheet, which progressed to a full blown web application :p

Thanks for the responses, and I hope you get something useful out of using it!

That section of the FAQ does seem to be worded rather strangely, but it comes down to common sense really. Posting your personal website (blog, photography gallery, family website etc.) is fine (although it's probably best to post in the sticky rather than creating a whole thread about it), but you shouldn't post a link if you stand to make a financial (or similar) gain by doing so. Personally I think this thread goes against that rule (the site has Google ads, and thus stands to make money from people visiting the site), but at the end of the day it's down to the discretion of the powers that be :)

Well I am personally glad this was posted. I'm on the committee of the York University Outdoor Society. One of our previous members set up another route card site, which is widely used and a great resource, and I'm glad to see another site that us walk planners can look for routes on.

I'm registering now (its being very slow!)
