So I've got this set of Labtec 5.1 surround sound speakers. They've always worked great on my old XP machine (Or so I thought(They actually only worked in 2.1 because I needed new drivers)) and they only cost me £15 due to a mispricing on the site I bought them (Believe me, they are not cheap). I bought them about 4-5 years ago and they still look new, huge subwoofer really packs a punch.

To the point, I've never done much high end gaming till I got my new rig, gaming galore and Vista 64 Ultimate. I ran a test straight off using the windows sound stuff and was delighted to hear sound out of all 5 and the woofer seperately, so I went into a game. Base base base base base, it took over everything, I have to turn the base down seperately to hear anything over it.

Sure enough, the speakers only work in 2.1 because they need new drivers. But as they're so old, I don't even know what model they are, and Labtecs site has no speakers on it anyway!

Is there any hope in finding a fix, or do you think it's time for some new speakers?

(I've really got to point out, these are NOT bad speakers, they are brilliant, worth more than I bought them for 4 years later, gotta love mispricing)

Speakers do not need drivers, unless maybe USB, which is probably why they have never worked properly. All they do is turn an electrical signal into kinetic energy.

You will need motherboard drivers or sound card drivers off of the manufacturers website (install the latest). Then use either supplied software or Windows bundled sound software to set it to 5.1 channel.

If you need assistance in that then I would post your motherboard model number or sound card model number.

Sorry, what I meant was that I needed drivers compatible for my speakers, and after looking around people said to check the manufacturer of the speakers' website, which I did, and they didn't have any.

I'll check for Mobo drivers in the morning relating to it though, thanks :)

Speakers do not need drivers ad Pea0n says, the sound card may need new drivers or as Pea0n says you might need motherboard drivers for your onboard sound.

You need to have a 5.1 soundcard either separate or built in, and the games need to be able to support it yes? some games won't have a 5.1 so may use EAX to emulate a surround sound environment.
