Any ideas on whats going on with my new CPU?

Hi,
I bought new CPU from OcUK athlon 64 x 2 6000 dual core 3.0GHZ & I installed it in my machine. Admitidly it went in an out a few times as I didnt realise I had to update my bios on my Asus M2N-MX SE Mobo. Once I updated my bios the CPU fired up & all seemed well.

I decided I wanted to run 3DMark06 to see my performance increase from my old CPU(Athlon 4800 64 x 2 Dual core 2.4GHz). I began to run it & it started well but then 20 secs in the framerate would drop right down to next to nothing & it looked like it was really struggling. It would then two & fro from running normally to struggling. I thought I'd wait to see the whole thing through to check out my score. My final score on the new CPU was 6724 but on my old CPU it was 8944(Vista). I checked to see if I had the latest drivers on my graphics care(9800GTX+) which I did.

I didn't use any thermal paste or anything because It already came with it on. Can someone give me an idea where I need to look because Ive just heard back from OcUK & they have tested the CPU & said there is nothing wrong with it(I returned it to them & said it was faulty as I thought it was)& have shipped it back to me. Ive looked everywhere in my bios but have a very limited bios. The multiplier & voltage are set to auto.

Appreciate any feedback.

Welcome to OcUK (claimed! :p). Maybe a daft question, but was the CPU HSF definitely seated properly? I don't know if AMD's chips throttle under max temps, but that's what it sounds like. The chip got hot, throttled down (hence the dip in framerate) and then as it cooled picked back up again etc etc.

Double check the HSF is seated properly (with some new TIM) and try again.

Hi guys,
Thanks for your replys. By HSF Im assuming thats the heat sink fan. Im using the Heatsink & fan that came with the CPU. I just assumed that it would be more than adequate to keep CPU cool. In regards to checking the fan to see whether it was attached properly I must admit I never checked. I actually took my PC to my local shop to have the CPU installed as I have never done it before,I watched him install it & the CPU came in & out a few times as my bios wasnt the right one for the CPU.

This time Im going to install it as I did put my old CPU back in when I was in a mood after finding out the new CPU wasn't running correctly. Tetras I have got CPU-Z which I do use. If I can remember rightly the temperature was around 55C I think but I coudn't be certain & I cant remember whether that was idle or on full load. Im getting my new CPU returned to me tomorow so I will have a go then.

Do you think that the heatsink & fan that came with it should be adequate? I mean it was a brand new CPU & the heatsink was more beefy than my old one with what looked like bronze pipes coming out of the side. Also would you advise cleaning off the thermal gunk & putting some new stuff on?

The HSF should be adequate, only if you were overclocking then I would proberly change it.
Like mentioned above run CPU-Z to check the cpu speed and then run Prime or Orthos to check your full load temps, this should give you some indication if you need to apply more thermal paste.

Edit: Just re-read your post above, you proberly need more thermal paste.

they should be fine as long as case ventilation is okayish

55 at full load sounds fine, if thats at idle then there is something wrong with either the cooler, the paste or the application of the HSF

Thanks for help again. Just out of curiousity how much thermal paste should I use? And also which is a good brand to use?

Also so if when I run 3DMark06 & it runs and then slows right down & runs & keeps doing that does that mean I need to apply more thermal paste?

Again thanks for all your help.

You dont need to use a lot of thermal paste - it should just act as a very thin briding layer between the HSF and the processor, too thick and it will inhibit cooling. If you go to the arctis cooling website they have guides for their main products (MX-2 and Silver5), which im sure could be used for any thermal paste. Anyhow, i would spread it so that it is almost see-through.

Nightmare has a good point - if the board does not support the chip, then you will have problems!

Hi,
Sorry nitmare I didnt see your post. Im not sure of the part number yet as I dont have the CPU until tomorow. I looked on the overclockers website & it doesnt state if its 125W, I can tell you the overclockers stock code CP-192-AM but thats probably no good to you.
I did check on the Asus website & it said I can go up to a 3.0GHz dual core processor so I'm hoping it should be ok. I will post the part number when I receive the CPU tomorow(Friday)back from Overclockers.I really hope thats not the case as Im kinda stuck with it now.
Thanks everyone for your comments it really has helped me out, wishing you all some good karma.

Hey nightmare,
Ive received the CPU this mourning & the part number is ADX6000IAA6CZCCB8F 0825EPMWY164984G80480 or at least I think this is the part number. I basically read the tiny writing off of the CPU.

Bummer your right nightmare. Just been looking on some forums & Asus's website & the ADX6000 is the 125W one it seems & after checking the Asus CPU cabilities I can only have an 89W one. I did check the Asus website before buying processer & just saw that I could go up to the 6000 I didnt realize about the watts.
I doubt overclockers will symphitise with my situation so it looks like im stuck with a great processor that I cant use, groovy!Doh & double doh!

Did you open it yet? If not you can return it under the DSR if it was delivered to you (rather than bought in the shop itself). Even if you did open it, they might still RMA it for you as unwanted. Just drop them a webnote to explain (a link to this thread couldn't hurt either), and see what they say. They've been pretty good with me so far on things like this :)

Also would you advise cleaning off the thermal gunk & putting some new stuff on?

You need some of this to clean the stuff off the cpu and the heatsink
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=OA-001-AK

I'd advise doing that anyway, I didn't on my last AMD and after a few months I tried to take the heatsink off the CPU and pulled the whole thing out of the socket with the CPU stuck to the bottom of the heatsink and the CPU was locked into the socket also :) There was also practically none of the pre applied stuff left either.

Theres some good videos on You Tube on how to apply (and not apply!) thermal compound.
