Hi, ive been researching for a while for a good quality £600-700 build for playing HD content, and playing casual games on full specs as well as all the usual PC business but i want it to run quietly and handle vista with ease.

i think ive FINALLY settled on a spec, but this is my first time so any opinions on the parts, or suggestions for improvements (as ive still got a couple of quid i could spend!) would be greatly appreciated, particularly in relation to CPU, MoBo and RAM as i still feel like i know NOTHING about them!

Gigabyte MoBo
Samsung Spinpoint 1TB
Powercolor ATI HD 4850
AMD athlon 64 x2 6000 3GHz
OCZ 4GB (2x2GB) PC2-6400C4 800MHz (PLUS free copy of GRID!)
LG GGC Blu-ray/HD-DVD drive
Corsair HX 520W
All in this case

Anything ive missed??

thanks guys, this site has already been massively helpful in researching this stuff!

thanks for your replies,

im only a casual gamer, so it's only gona be stuff like spore, WoW and trackmania.....but i'd like to be able to run them on the highest settings to show off my 40in display! from what ive read the 4850 would do it....would the extra 80 quid on a 4870 be worth it for me? im not playing crysis or anything!!

i looked at core 2's but for the equivalent clock speed it was an extra £50 so i wasn't sure if it was worth it.......is it? would an intel 3GHz run much faster than an AMD at 3GHz?

i would stick with that setup, especially if not overclocking. to get a similar speed intel chip will cost you more. the 4850 is a cracking card and probably just better value than the 4870. the 4850 will play those games and more at the highest settings.

ok........wow......i've read a lot in the last hour, and my brain hurts, but i think ive reached a conclusion, im going to stick with my graphics card but upgrade my CPU (and concequently my MoBO) to Intel.

i really want to get this stuff bought tonight so if anyone could have a quick look over this spec for me and let me know of any problems or suggestions id very much appreciate it!!

Asus P5Q Pro MoBo

Intel c2d E8400
Corsair HX 520 (does 520W sound about right?)
LG GGC Blu-Ray
OCZ 4GB (2x2GB)
Powercolor ATI HD 4850
Samsung spinpoint 1TB
Thermaltake Case

You may want to consider a 4850 with a dual slot cooler so that the hot stuff from the card gets blow out by the card and doesn't heat up the system, CPU & PSU forcing all there fans to speed up.

right boys and girls, i finally took the plunge and ordered that little lot this morning, thanks to everyone for your advice i look forward to struggling to put it together and posting some more questions on this forum!! ;)

2nd spec is a lot better, I'd got gone for the HIS ICEQ card though, comes with a great cooler on it, but you can always upgrade yur 4850 easily enough!

PSU is a very strong choice! no worries ;)

The performance boost of the intel over the amd imo is not worth the price
If you go back to amd up the mobo though you really want a 790fx nb with a 750sb espically if you want to OC.
And rendering has always been intels fortay
