Any kettle lead in any device?

You probably need to check the fuse in the plug 1st to see if there isnt a 3amp fuse in it before you plug it into a 'kettle'

Otherwise a 3 amp fuse will be OK for up to 750 watt draw, A kettle lead is bog standard anyway (though you may get a 2 pin one like I have for my USA subwoofer)

what amp is needed for 850w? I can't remember what I did with the lead from my 850w cm real power m850 psu, have lots of different kettle leads so not sure which one it is.

I've not used that psu over 2yrs but getting it out as I'm putting together a sandybridge system with 6950 toxic xfire(doubt the corsair hx620 would be able to handle it).

5 amp for 850watt, although 13 would probably be fine as well :)
850 is about 3.5amps so 5a is the nearest normal fuse, but may not be enough headroom for any start up surge when the psu is near full load.

an 850W PSU can consume 1KW at full load as it's not 100% efficient.
As werewolf points out, startup surge is an issue. We have some PCs that trip out a 30A breaker if all 5 turn on at the same time.
The ATX specification states that the inrush current must not exceed 50A, which is quite insane!

There's 2 things to check, the plug/lead needs to say 13a and there should actually be a 13a fuse in it.

Not sure I'd ever use 13a and safe in the same sentence though :s :p
