Been told by RAC that my car needs a engine flush ,Does anyone know a ballpark figure i should be looking at so not to get ripped off?

An engine flush for what reason? I presume they mean the oil flushing through.

Yip, or just drain out how much was overfilled. You get suction machines that suck out from the dipstick. Most garages should have one.

The car was absolutely fine put a little to much oil in it ,common mistake and its flooded the engine. Only drove 2 miles and smoke pouring out the back as its being burned off i guess

RAC guy took one look and said hes seen it a thousand times . Waiting for the tow truck to take me to garage.

How much is "a little too much"? Did you also fill it with the right grade oil?

I have a feeling that it's a bit more than that, as I have had previous cars overfilled by as much as 30% and it hasn't had anything like that even on driving it for a couple of thousand miles.

If it's causing the engine to smoke as much as you describe, there is a chance that it did serious engine damage and the additional pressure has blown some seals. It can also damage your catalytic converter. If I were you, I'd drain the excess oil and then see how the car drives. A garage will probably charge about....£20 to drain some oil?

Yes it was the right oil i purchased it from halfords . Oil was very very low and the recommended amount was 3.5 litres so i put in just under 3 but under estimated how much was in the car .

Just got to garage and car will be looked at sometime today .

Mechanic said as i hadnt gone to far it will have just flooded and hopefully not caused any major damage . He said most damage is done when you fill up the oil to much then thrash it down the motoway at 70 miles an hour .

Did the concept of adding 500ml at a time and checking the dispstick not occur to you?

Your oil was low so you yourself just chucked in 3 litres as a top up? Did you not at least think of doing half a litre at a time then checking the dipstick?

Very low, as in, it wasn't even registering on the dipstick? Did you make sure you were on level ground, the car was at operating temperature and had sat for 10 minutes after you turned the engine off (or whatever your manual says)?

The only reason I ask is that if the car *was* very very low on oil and you put 3 litres in, this probably would have only led to a small overfill and not enough to cause the car to start smoking like a Trotters Independent Traders van. So perhaps there was more oil in the engine than you thought?

Had it been burning a lot of oil already to make it get that low in the first place, or had you just not checked it in months?

Obviously not?

Car was cold and had been sitting for 2 months not used . The oil was so low it was hardly registering on dip stick so thought just under 3 litres would have been fine considering the car holds 3.5

If it was just about registering on the bottom of the dipstick, it's likely that it only needed 1.5 litres at most to bring it to the max mark.

The marks on the dip stick, low to full is just 1l.

If it was barely registering on dip stick, so below the min mark, then 1.5l would have done the trick.

As others have said when topping up oil go 0.5l at a time, sometimes less, never more.

You have put around 2l too much oil in your engine, they can handle upto 0.5l over but anything more will cause all kinds of issues, fingers crossed that you have not done any permanent damage as too much oil can harm an engine just like too little can.

For reference - the distance between the min and max mark represents 1 litre of oil. This is pretty much the same for every car, sometime's it's 750ml but the best bet is to check the manual.

Ah right, yeh, a litre would have been more than enough. Oh well, hopefully nothing has been damaged too much.
