This should be a very simple one. What is the easiest way to get numbers aligned properly when creating a contents page? Here's an example of what I'd like to do:

Chapter 1.................................................................1

1. Introduction..........................................................1
2. Next bit................................................................2 (how to get these aligned?)

Cheers people

Use a right-tab for your tab stop, rather than a left-tab (thus all characters align so the tab stop is always to the right)

Best way to create a contents page is to format the text in your document using the correct styles (ie highlight each topic heading and then apply a style, heading1..heading2..etc).

Then at the begining of your document just insert a table of contents, this will then be generated/numbered (and aligned) automatically using all the section headings.

Thanks very much. The Table of Contents option worked a treat. It seems to be really flexible and powerful when you get used to it

This is going to save me a lot of work! Sorry for being such a Word n00b :o :D

Thanks a million people!

Just another quickie... do you know how to do the following with a table of contents?

Chapter 1.................................................................1

1. Introduction..........................................................1
2. Next bit................................................................2

Change to:

Chapter 1.................................................................i

1. Introduction..........................................................ii
2. Next bit................................................................iii

Many thanks!

Open up the footer/header where you have the page numbers listed, select 'format page numbers' from the header/footer toolbar, select the correct style (ie i, ii, iii).

Now close this and go back to your TOC, right-click, select update entire table and the new format should be applied.

The above may not be 100% correct as I'm doing this off the top of my head, but should be good enough to get you there.

Thanks dude - that's amazing!

Is it possible to start your page numbering with i, ii, iii, iv and then progess to 1, 2, 3... and have this reflected in a single TOC?

Just insert a section break where you want to change the formatting (insert->break->section break) then on the header/footer toolbar, select format page numbering. change the style in the new section and click "start at". enter the starting page number and away you go :)
