Any official word on the GTX 970/980 coil whine?

the same people but from the other side will point out to this as a big flaw. The 290's had the same problem it's not new and unfortunately it's not uncommon

Agreed, I think OCUK should post an official notice on the website and forum regarding the coil whine issue stating their policy on returns... how hard can it be to get that done!

no point some staff say they will be replaced, and others saying no! simply not good customer service..

The cards with coil whine are faulty so should be replaced, nothing on the MSI, ASUS website stating "your £300 gfx card my come with coil whine, but don't worry performance isn't affected"!

I'm sure Gibbo has already tried to make OcUK's stance on this clearer in another coil whine post. If I recall, the jist of it was if the coil whine is audable over the rest of their test system with the cade closed then it would be swapped.

After a slight star it out fully up with my gtx970 order, I should receive the replacement tomorrow. I am eager to test it and hope that there is no coil whine :/

My ASUS has slight coil whine when idle but only if you put your ear right up close to it. I'm not fussed about that. It becomes more noticeable in a game but only if you're looking for it. Seems like I've been one of the more lucky ones.

Its been said that a different PSU can fix the issue. But what's the rule with this? Is it just a gamble?

It's a gamble. I've tested two high quality PSUs with my MSI 970, and the whine was the same with both.

Having said that, my card is quiet under normal use and gaming, and only whines under benchmarking (500+ fps) - so all-in-all, I'm fine with it.

Is there a list/poll etc of the best/worse cards for this issue?

As having scanned so many pages, its all a bit unclear bar some newer versions/updates have been up "specced" to alleviate the issue?

Thanks, I am not sure the poll helps too much bar it shows its a fault across most brands, assuming some things like MSI sold on price, GB on out of the box clocks, they both seem to suffer.

Until new Rev's I will sure not be spending on one!.

Yup, it isnt a fantastic representation as MSI's are by far the hottest sellers. It is a bit overblown though as all electrical devices whine, just some louder than others same goes for GPU's

It sure does highlight a design issue though, new Revs etc should be able to sort by spending a few more pennies on the components.

This is where these forums work well :)

If I had just spent £260+ on a GPU and it literally was doing my head in by using it as it was designed to be, I sure would be rejecting it as it is not fit for purpose.

It is amazing that on one sub section 9XX sales are the keen topic, price match etc and then the reality kicks in from owners. I am not saying the 9xx is a lemon but if OC is the main UK seller, then why keep selling a problem product, force a revision, or stall sales until they do.

I love Gibbo's efforts to help us but I have to say this dents the sentiment. The talked about OC cards will have better caps, so why still sell "non- ideal cards". Customer service is about everything in the buying experience.

Come on OC please!

I agree, i think the current line of 'if the vendor determines the issue is really bad then you are 100% rather than 95% protected', is far from ideal in the face of what rightly or wrongly is an accepted issue and a somewhat subjective one at that.

(dsr wont pay for your return postage without a vendor acknowledged fault)

perhaps there is a market vendors are missing out on...now they know the return rate.

charge X% more, for a no (less) quibble return policy, for full refund of costs including postage (delivery & return)..

If the amount of customer interpretted faults is so low..the premium X% will be low...
and may help sales not hinder them....
