Any older CPU still worth a purchase?

Hi all

Just been on EBay looking at second hand CPU's and came across a few i5 4690k's for around £170

I've been trying to keep an eye out for my old man for when he gets a new CPU to take the place of his current 3570 non K... Are any of the older CPU's still worth a purchase for around that price... He will Overclock his new one...

Also if he was to get the older 1150 socket CPU then will he need to Change MOBO as the 3570 is in a 1155 socket or am I right in thinking the MOBO can still be used do the 4690k

3770k and overclock. Noticeable gains from a lower speed i5 and will eliminate bottlenecks in virtually all scenarios, at least for now. It's worth it if you have the mobo and ram already.
 
Don't pay ebay prices. The majority of used Haswells on there are selling for more money than they were when new. There is a lot of massive greed going on there these days.

3930k (or 4930k) are great cpus and can be found anywhere between £100 and £150 - depends if you need the cores. Finding a cheap mobo can be challenging though.

I've had my 3930k (hexcore) for a while now, I can't justify upgrading it to anything else just now as it still breezes through anything I throw at it.

Unless anyone else can weigh in, I'm not aware of any bad egg makes/models.

Edit: Gone through 2nd hand completed listings and am a bit shocked at the pricing now since last year pre-brexit. Imo there are no bargains.

For anyone looking to by from scratch 2nd hand, a 3570K/2500K/2600K can still be OK value. But the 3770K pricing tips it way over the edge. Just buy new zen tbh.

The £70+ mobo price for most 2nd hand z77s and £150+ 3770K price mean to me you won't get a big enough gains over your current setup for the shear time and effort required to sell on your old kit. Imo.

So do you reckon I should maybe tell him to get a Ryzen 1500x or something along those lines then it's all new shiny and under complete warranty
 
Pretty much. 2nd hand z77 seems to now cost 85% of new Zen 4 core.

Perhaps people are buying mobos for repair keeping whats left of 1155 too high?
And the outlying 3770K price is people upgrading just the chip because they can't be bothered to switch the whole platform?

The AMD 4 core is not on par with the new ones, but OK vs the old.

Its about the same as the 3770K, hence people recommending the 3770K earlier in the thread - probably without realising how expensive they are.
The new AMD over this 5 year Intel chip is 12-15% at a push better IPC (instructions per clock - ie torque if it were an engine) but, crucially 12-15% less GHz top speed.

Imo what the AMD is 4 core is good at:
You don't need to clock it like the Intel K chip. Very very good if it goes **** up later and you are dealing with family members.
It comes with a cooler which is OKish for your intended use.
New, warranty. Again good as you are dealing with family members.
Upgrade options in later years. We assume that we will be able to put later 7nm 8 core chips in a mobo bought this year. And this is the only reason why you might go 4 now instead of stumping up for a 6 core chip etc ( current 6 needs more cooling, price etc).

What are the Intel I7 old chips are good at?
Convenience if you have a clockable board or only need a 25% boost to your existing I5 at stock speed.

Hopefully gone full circle to answer your thread question: Is it worth buying an old CPU?

This is very helpful bud, now I'm getting the gist of it all... I will persuade my old man to go the Ryzen route of things.. it would make more sense spending money on a newer CPU instead of the same price for an older CPU...

No they aren't. Their IPC is pretty low, and X79 second hand board is expensive.
Someone could be better off with the Ryzen 5 6-core and a B350 board and overclock, could be better off in the long term than buying into a 4 year old dead system without upgrade path.
