Windows Firewall and a decent AV along with common sense is all you need :)

It's pretty self defeating having an anti-virus program and setting up a firewall but at the same time running as an administrator. Your system configuration isn't protected so malware can very easily turn of your anti-virus solution along with the firewall.

Doesn't vista have that setup by default, as the true admin account is hidden by default and to enable it you need to type 'net user administrator /active:yes' into the cmd prompt.

It's a Protected Administrator account whereby you run with standard user rights but you are still an administrator.

great post as usual.

I set peoples systems pretty much as standard as I can and load both Avast and ccleaner on all machines I build, repair or reload windows on.

I normally leave them some very basic instruction like how to manage security, what to do if they get a virus and the basic dos and don'ts of internet usage.. Keeps them ticking along with minimal effort and i've had good feed back from it..

I'm happy to forward the document to anyone who wishes to use it but if your posting here, you should already know. email in siggy :)

:)

this is how I leave cleints pc's..

get them a router if they don't have one
set uac to silent if using vista (or they'll disable it)
nod32
windows updates on automatic
firefox with adblock plus

spywareblaster & spybot's immunize function set.

Yep I suppose you could get away with just those but I just have a router, FF with Ad Block Plus / NoScript and never had problems.... ever!

a router is the most important one of all

I would probably say so, yes.

Common Sense

Although I'm a great believer in common sense, it doesn't apply to the majority of average PC users, in particular older peoppl who are generation away from todays technology. What is pretty much mainstream for us, isn't for these. As a consulatant, you have be able to adapt and cater for differennt people at different ageswith different abilities, of which some have only just managed to use a microwave, let alone a PC :)

Common Sense

+1

I don't use AV software. I got fed up a the slow scans, constant updates and false positives years ago.

Download from reputable sites, act cautiously on websites and don't click on every button you see just because it says "OK"

If somebody in the street approached you or called your home offering any of the above you would ignore it as the usual junk. For some reason people can't help themselves as soon as they connect to the internet.
