I must say things have been a bit more civilised around here recently..;)
Interesting times ahead with the up and coming new GFX cards !
 
I think people have accepted that for mid range cards ATi are best, top end cards nvidia are best. It's not a bad way to be but I'd really love to see ATi with a card soon that can rival nVidias best. For cheaper of course!
 
Bah. I was really hoping I could find a review with a Matrox card beating some really old Nvidia/ATI card so I could make a baseless claim about Matrox's cards being the best. Damn you google for not furnishing me with sweet sweet lies.
 
I think people just had a reality check, and finally saw past all the marketting rubbish (for the moment). 88xx series (in general) better than 29xx and 38xx series but more expensive in comparison.

And to be honest, I don't actually think there are that many exciting products at the moment. 48xx and 2xx (nvidia) are not exactly wetting my appetite, like say the 8800gtx did or the 8800gt overclockers wet dream ;) (not that I have dreams about any technology apart from cars lol)

I believe everyone means to say 3DFX -> ALL. Glide on Quake 1 and Half Life 1 was incredible, I can remember my friends draw dropping when he saw the half life 1 intro in Glide mode :D
 
I always wanted a Banshee, even though a voodoo 2 card would out-perform it and it had weird compatibility issues. The "crazy" idea of having a 3d accelerator AND a 2d card on ONE pcb was just too cool ;)
 
Gfx card market is being held back by consoles being the leading gaming platform for developers

all we get now are 360 level gfx games which any £100 card can handle easily so there is not a lot of demand for extreme levels of gfx and those who need this can go sli crossfire

bottom line no software no demand for high end gfx = no real developments in gfx cards for about 2 years

I see Scougar's point. The 8800GT was rumoured to be almost as quick as a GTX (resolution not too high) but was going to be sold for £130 which was a third of the price of a 8800GTX.

That got a lot of people excited. Finally all those people running on 22" or smaller screens but could never afford the GTX would finally be able to upgrade their graphics to a decent level.

The new cards aren't really exciting me either. A GTX280 which might be 50% quicker than a 9800GTX (or 8800GTS G92 in disguise if your reading this Loadsa!) but is going to cost £450- £500 so is of no interest to me.

AtI have a 4850 card which is going to be maybe £130-£140 and slightly faster/same speed as a 9800GTX (and hence a GTS G92) so although cheaper for better performance, I already have a GTS so no interest.

And the 4870 is meant to be 30% quicker than it's sister and around £200 so a good new buy over the GTS for anybody building new/upgrading their old system but since I will get less than £100 for my GTS (probably), it won't be worth it spending £100 for a 30% gain so of little interest to me either.

I think so many people finally upgraded their graphics cards to either GT/GTS, and ATI top cards or even 8800GTX (when there were selling them off cheap) after waiting for ages for a faster card for reasonable money that the uptake, and hence interest, in these new cards is much less even though they are finally next gen.

If the rumours were showing that the 4850 was faster than anything out now, the 4870 was a 50% improvement and the GTX 280 was twice as quick as the fastest card then there would have been a lot more excitement.

I may try and pick up a cheap 4870 later this year but that's about it.

EDIT: And I have just thought, that depends on it overclocking well. Look at the speeds I'm running my GTS (watercooled) in my sig - it probably already quicker than a 4870 at stock.

The biggest load of sense that I 100% agree with I've read in ages... completly agree mate for all your reason, I just couldn't be arsed writing it down, but yeah, point well made fella

Well I've just seen rumours that the 4850 is 40% faster than the 8800GT....so imagine when overclocked...
