It does look like they've gone for a very different style with this one, doesn't seem to have much character or atmosphere. I'll be more than happy if that's wrong though.
GTA1 was awesome and 'naughty' for its time and GTA3 was the same but in '3D' if you like which makes it 100 times better. GTA3 is still better than SA and GTA4 but only a tiny bit better than VC.
Orcarina Of Time has yet to be beaten and was the first 3d zelda. Max Payne 1 was far the best of the series. Turok 2 was better than anything after it. Mass Effect was better than 2 which in turn KOTOR was better than KOTOR 2. Forza 2 Multiplayer was better than Forza 3. BF1942 was the best in the series. COD 1 was the best in the series from a single player point of view. Bioshock 1 was better than 2. GTA:SA (Pretty much the pinacle of the old engine) was better than GTA:4. etc etc
Most of the games that are actually fresh and good are the new IP's. Deadspace, Fallout (Technically not a new IP but produced in a different way), Bioshock and Gears of War are my pics of this generation which will no doubt get worse (or in some cases already have) as the sequels come out.
The vast majority of games have sequels where the original is better, and it usually takes a few iterations until they finally top the first. I don't know why this normally is, I guess it's because sequels inherently have to deviate from the original, thus losing some of what made it tick in the first place.
I'm pretty sure UT came out on the Dreamcast first, I could be wrong though!
You can always view Unreal Championship as the follow-up - it's always been considered the console version of UT2k4 albeit with some differences.
Got me beat on the CS thing there... until CS:GO that is
Banjo Kazooie / Banjo Tooie > Banjo Nuts & Bolts.
Mario 64 > Mario Galaxy
Zelda OoT > Newer Zelda games
Perfect Dark > Perfect Dark Zero
Goldeneye
Devil May Cry
Sonic
Final Fantasy
Mammoth Super Metroid session? It only takes an hour. hehe.
(that's 1 thing i've noticed going back to old games. They are sooo short!)
Anyway. yes, i prefer Super Metroid over all others.
Super Mario Kart
Super Mario World
You know, a lot of the old SNES games have never been topped IMO. Not in their own series anyway.
Regarding basic games and sequels then i can't think of any sequel I prefer.
The biggest margin in drop of performance i can think of is Alundra 1 to Alundra 2.
Tomb Raider is another series that went down the pan.
A lot has to do with your age and nostalgia mind i reckon. You just have these memories of playing during your childhood and if you like nostalgic things half as much as me then this will be a contributing factor.
