Hi,

Currenly at college doing a BTEC National in Computing...

I've been there since september and im really not happy there, for someone who spends their life on the pc the stuff they teach just bores me to death. I have a nightschool course starting after Christmas (SQL, Java + vb.net) which im really looking forward to... however i'm really thinking about quitting college and getting a job with my neighbour to help gain experience, although my main goal is to go to university... would 2 years of work experience and a couple (18 week) night school courses be enough to get in?

I would much rarther take this route... i dread going into college at the moment and i really cant see me lasting 2 more years

some advice would be great :)

if you cant do college why can you do uni?

you should be able to get into Uni but you first need to find a course and then you need to speak to the uni in question to see about getting a place even if you don't have the required qualifications.

I'll give you an example of the task we did to get a merit last week

Perform a matenance task on a computer

... we wiped the computer's case down and gave the monitor a clean

I assume Uni is different - giving Liverpool Uni a call a bit later on

What college are you doing that course at?
I did the same qualification, and admitadly most of it i already knew, but its worth sticking out imo. Good base to go from, and if your finding it easy, you should get a good mark in it.
:).

lol, for me uni is, well not that bad, but the amount of java we learnt in the first year, well, it took most people less than a couple weeks to learn it, do nothing for the year, a days revision and aced the exam. it was pathetic. all the way through schooling i've been bored to tears and all the team teachers, parents said, just wait till gcse's, then wait till a levels, then wait till uni, then 2nd year is much harder. all of it's been completely boring and crap. mostly because school is now geared for the stupidest of the stupid to pass courses, so you don't have to be much smarter to pass the same course very well, and anyone slightly smart will be bored to tears. almost everyone i knew(lots a year ahead of me) finished with 2:1's and 1st's and we were out most nights drinking, went to almost no lectures, did all the work the day before deadline(most, dissertation a little earlier), across a broad range of subjects so many people did so little.

Try and read up about access courses azzerz. I don't know about the rest of the UK but Scotland have a programme called SWAP, which is meant to be a guaranteed route into university even if you don't have the other more typical qualifications.

You are kidding right? Cleaning PCs can't be part of an exam or course work so what's the point? If what you say is true I'd make a complaint to the head of department.

Have you thought about doing A levels instead?

Think long and hard before pursuing a career in IT, you clearly enjoj computing as a hobby and I warn you now that working in the field day in day out will slowly but surely destroy your love for it.

Other than that try ringing a few Uni's see what advice they give you, or have a chat at college and look at doing something that challenges you a bit more than you current course maybe chuck in an AS in maths or something along side it.

Very serious

The course has no exams, purely coursework...

Thanks for the feedback guys, I have phoned up college and said i wont be returning

btw, for the person who asked - my college is just outside of Liverpool

got a job starting next monday, which will help pay for my night courses plus give me a lot of experience (same job i did over the summer - building + installing IT equipment)

im feeling suprisingly good right now... im hoping ill stay this way

I was thinking the same thing... but it seems to do the opposite (atleast right now anyway)

there really isnt anything else im interested in either

That must be the funniest thing I've read.

I done the same course about four years ago, and I found it very boring. By the end of the first year I was considering a career change, but decided to stick it out and then ended up in Uni.

Uni's normally make exceptions for mature students (21+) if they haven't got the required qualifications, but if you've got your night courses and some experience, I don't see why you shouldn't get in.

Thanks buddy, i'm calling them (uni) later to see exactly where I stand...
