Any point in an upgrade?

Been thinking about it on and off over the last few months but still undecided. Current build as in sig a 5900x 32 gigs of ram and a *9070xt (*yet to installed).

Been considering an upgrade to an 9950x3d setup, but as my current monitor is a now aging 60hz 4k panel, I'm not really sure I would see much benefit as that res is more gpu bound than cpu. Was considering maybe switching to 34x14 180hz ultrawide for the time being on my current build to let it stetch its legs a bit more at a lower res, though coming from the sharpness of 4k I'm not really sure if the downgrade in res will be palatable. Then there's talk about a 9950x3d2 coming which will probably be a small bump over the current one, but for a full platform build it would probably make more sense to wait for that and get as much performance as I can for the cash out of the box as I can't be arsed tinkering with clocking anymore.

Given memory and storage prices this is probably the worst time to get a new platform (and we don't even know how long this will last and pricing could get worse later in the year), so I'm maybe leaning a bit more towards the budget ultrawide (asrock phantom) for the time being.

/scratches chin. :o

I honestly wouldn't bother in your situation, especially given the prices of RAM right now.

If you don't need the extra cores of the 5900X you could consider switching to an X3D AM4 CPU, although at 4K/60hz that's going to have very limited to no benefits. It's absolutely worth it if you switch to a 1440P ultrawide with a high refresh however, that's the sort of monitor I'm running at the moment with a 5800X3D.

The problem there is AM4 X3D CPU's are like hens teeth right now and command a bit of a premium, but given you're on a 5900X you could potentially do a straight swap for a 5700X3D. Maybe pop in a request on the MM and try your luck? There's bound to be people looking for a productivity CPU that are currently on an X3D.

If you've some cash to burn there's some really well priced OLED ultrawides, I'm running a Phillips Evenia and absolutely love the thing, it was £450 when I bought it a year or so back.

Might even be able to get a new 5800x3d if amd resumes production of them, again a wait and see thing.

Is your monitor the evnia M2C6500? ? Looking at some reviews on youtube, 4k version at 240hz looks very nice https://www.overclockers.co.uk/phil....5-240hzhdr-tb400-usb-c-hd-mon-php-03541.html

No, it's the 34M2C8600 I believe (without digging around for the order, there's that many bloody model numbers/variants for the same things with tech):

I use it alongside a 4K 65" TV as a second/couch gaming monitor and find the two to be an excellent combination. For games that benefit a mouse/keyboard more (fps/rts and a few others) or have particularly high requirements where I'd favour higher FPS I use the Phillips. For everything else I do the couch potato mode and use a wireless 8bitdo Ultimate controller, usually RPG/Adventure type stuff that I can get away with from a performance perspective.

OLED monitors are really starting to hit good price points and are probably the best value PC gaming components we have right now tbh.

If you want to go 4K this is a bit of a gem for the price:

Yeah seems to be a lot of them with similar names, the m2c6500 appears to be the latest model in the 34" variety. Have to have a think about it.

It should significantly improve the 1% lows for much smoother gameplay.

There are a lot of exciting new monitors being announced at CES. Especially if you play older games a high refresh 4K monitor would make a lot of sense.

It's really the only area I think is shining right now for PC gamers, you can pick up a 49" super ultrawide OLED for £650 at the moment.

That's ludicrously good pricing for an OLED of that size, the only real caveat is game support and genre. You'd not want to try using one for competitive FPS but good lord when playing sims it's a vast improvement over any triple monitor setup in my opinion.

The monitors might not be as competent at things like HDR as some OLED tv's, but they carry almost every other benefit at a massively reduced cost. I know a ton of people that use 42" LG OLED tv's as monitors and still do, but you're looking at over a grand unless there's a damn good sale for the ones with good gaming features.

Agreed, but its main gaming use case is driving and flight and space sims, not FPS.

Oh god no, shy of having fish eyes it'd be a massive detriment to most competitive play outside of sims.

For general use it'll probably be a pain in the bum for a lot of games too, ultrawide support has improved a lot but it's such a niche that I'd never use it for playing RPG's or the like (outside of 1440P ultrawides).

Looking through some reviews and happened across another video that claims that QD-OLED panels are stupidly easy to scratch, basically no matter how careful you are with it. :o WO-Led is apparently a lot better in that respect but the colours are less vibrant on those panels.
