Any point in looking for a non-usb Headset?

I have a pair of Roccat Kave headphones, which I've never been terribly happy with... tonight they've have started randomly increasing my PC volume. I normally listen at around 20% vol, so when it suddenly jumps to 60+% it's not so nice. :(

I've unplugged the USB connector and it's stopped happening. Sadly this has also stopped the headset working full stop (why they bothered with the 5 soundcard jacks is beyond me). So they have to go....

I've been looking at the headsets offer at OcUK and a lot of them seem to be USB connected with an external soundcard. Should I care? I have an X-fi card in the PC. Is it worth trying to find a pair of headphones that only connect via 3.5 in jacks, or is it not going to make a difference?

I use my PC for listening to music as much as anything else, and while I'm not exactly an audiophile, I do appreciate good sound quality. So if anyone has any headphones they can recommend with that in mind it would be appreciated.

Thanks.

I've just received my set of DT 770 Pro's and the quality of the sound is fantastic even with my onboard audio, extremely comfy for extended use, i got the 80 ohm version although you can get a 32ohm version if you want to use them with portable devices, there's also a 250 ohm version for hifi use.

Paid £113 from music specialist shop in Brighton and received them the next day.

If you want a Mic you could go for http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=SP-007-ZA&groupid=702&catid=1058&subcat=1478 for gaming etc to go with some quality headphones.

Budget is not really an issue, though that Astro A40 is pushing it a bit. I guess anywhere up to £200 would be reasonable if I am going to notice the difference - they'll get used a lot.

If I'm not going to notice the difference; £100 is more likely.

I'm not bothered by microphones or other gizmos. Sound Quality and comfort are my only criteria.

astro's should be at the £200 budget, i got mine second hand for £80 all in and they were perfect

Under £200 I might be tempted. Though the first site I looked at has them at £350 to £400 "from these sellers". I must admit I didn't search very hard.

Is the sound quality that noticeably better? I'd prefer Clarity over Boom.

No mic required. I can't remember ever using one. I use my tablet for skype etc, and I've never been too fond of things like Battlefield. :p

Essentially I need to buy new headphones, and would like to get the best out of my existing soundcard. I'm a liitle bit suspicious that these usb connected headsets won't do that.

 I'm gutted that my X-Fi (Platinum Fatallity Champton blah blah) is now worse than a £20 Xonar. :( I've kept it far longer than I ever intended to as for many years I was still using the daughter-board to record vinyl.

It might be time to upgrade that though, and get a pair of mid-range headphones, as you suggest. The alternatives seem to be a bit extreme.
