Any point to upgrading from 4Ghz Core 2 for games?

glad to see what is said when game first come out is being proved right :D

play bfbc2 get a quad :D

Ye me too although, I sold my old set (Xeon E3110 (E8400) / Asus Maximus Formula / 4GB Corsair Dominator PC8500) to a friend. He was on my LAN party last weekend with a 5770. He ran @ stock and on medium it was DAMN smooth gameplay. My girlfriend was looking at me like "WHY THE PEEP DID YOU UPGRADE FFS" :D

min = 34fps, avg = 63fps, max = 97fps

this is on max settings, 8x AA

Yeah, I might try your settings to see what difference there is, I was running with FOV: 68 though.

What is your quad clocked at ?

Do you have a custom fan profile ? That looks very odd, It doesn't match up with the GPU temp.

I did copy & paste your settings in but it never saved (!)

Will post up another with all high.

Had the GPU set @950/1200 for some reason :/

My K/D ratio took a hit playing on all high :)

Both gpus and cpus are nearly at their max, spec in sig. All settings to high with 8xCSAA 16xAF at 1920*1080. Does it mean I won't see much improvement going to a quad?

thanks SirCanealot . . . I think what needs to be uncovered here is whether or not peoples GPU's are maxed . . . . I absolutely expect most peoples graphics cards to be running at 100% while gaming . . . . admittedly I'm not familiar with the very latest titles but I'd be suprised if they made such demands of a CPU that the GPU was left running at 50%load

I'm also *not* a game creator/coder so I'm not sure what is eating so many processor cycles in the newer titles . . . . afaik the processor draws the wireframes and the GPU renders them i.e . . .

your talking purely graphics here, which in most cases, is handled mostly by the gpu.

however, there are many other processing required in games that just what you see on screen.

the main ones will be the games physics, and this can include all the collision detection routines and object movement etc.

Theres also the AI, really good AI is very processor intensive.

a game engine in general works in frames, so the cpu will process each frame before the gpu gets a chance to render it. This means all the movement, ai, etc is done, then the gpu will render the finished result

if the cpu is struggling, and its taking longer for it to compute all this, the gpu has to wait before rendering the next frame, which will reduce your fps, and the gpu will get rest between frames so it doesn't max out its processors

one easy test, is usually to check your fps, then drop or increase the graphics options/resolutions, etc

if you get little change in your fps, then you know ur cpu is struggling.

also remember that not all games will make use of multiple cores, althou less so now with newer games. For these, dual or quad core systems will make no difference

And the happy news for people all sad about their dual core bottlenecking their gameplay is that they can get the use of their gpu by whacking up the sliders and maxing out the frames they do get! :p

my quad was clocked at 4ghz for that test...

yes i used a custom fan profile. i was setting it up while the game was running. that why it looks up and down.

Lol no :p

Obviously BC2 utilises all available cores, doesn't mean your fps will go up at >1680x1050 by any considerable amount, that's all down to your GPU!

upgrading your cpu will only increase your fps if its bottlenecking your system and u have a gpu that can handle much higher already
