Any proper, automatic 4x4s out there that emit less than 225co2s?

I thought Jimny's were RWD, swear I saw one stuck in the snow in France spinning the rear wheels?

Paradigm will back me up/correct me.

They have selectable 2wd and low/high ratio 4wd transfer boxes. I.e. don't switch to 4WD unless you're going seriously off road

The CO2 probably matters for tax reasons

I have to say that I struggle to believe that a RAV4 could ever be worse than a Jimny, which was berated as being a disaster on wheels.
Unless you need real mud plugging ability of a Landrover of Landcruiser, then the RAV4 would be my choice of 4x4.

The Jimny was the replacement for the SJ/Samurai range, hi/lo ratio x-fer box and selectable 2 or 4 wheel drive. i THINK the Jimny engages the front diff by means of a vacuum pump. They are quite competant offroad as standard. Unlike the X5. Prices are staying relatively high as the silly buggers are starting to use them.

co2 matters because I don't want to pay ken's £25 charge every morning and I can only have 1 car. I want something small that's good offroad, has high ground clearance and is automatic. Something like the jimny, but perhaps a bit more upmarket.

Test drove the defender 90 before I heard about the £25 charge and loved it. Seriously. It was incredible. But, manual only and now the whole CO2 thing matters.

Then test drove the freelander diesel auto - which was ok.

Both are too expensive anyway.

How much are you spending on the car? As i assume the CO2 is for tax reasons, but if you buy something better offroad for many thousands less than something not as good but greener, then even with the higher tax bill it will be cheaper in the long run.

This makes sence in the very short term, but the extra £125/week tree tax soon eats through even a 2 grand saving.

.

ah the congestion charge.

Its not official yet, but reportedly the co2 emission based charge only applies to cars registered after March 1st 2001.

If the car was registered before that, and under 3L then it doesnt qualify for the charge

know any decent 2.5 TD offroaders on an X plate ?

Can't think of many Automatics 4x4's that do less than 225gkm.

Freelander 2 is a good bet, looks great and nice to drive, although a smaller 4x4, it's better than most.

Have driven a Chevrolet Captiva and that was surpsingly better than I expected, the diesel auto should come in under that. No idea about how good off road though.

Kia sorento has a 2.5 Diesel Auto option, that should come under the 225 limit and is supposedly better off road than CRV/Rav4 type cars

Other than the usual CRV, Rav4 not sure what else there is. Best to go older and see what you can get under 3l.

So get something X reg or older thats less than 3000cc. Then it doesnt matter what C02 it pumps out.

Or realise this is another izoniez post and thus nothing will ever come of it ;)

Jeeps out then being 4.0L. The diesel isn't well regarded but useable but AFAIK manual only. There is also a 2.5 petrol but I think manual only too.

What about those Pinin (pint size) Shogons - some of them were pre 01 but not sure on CC.

What about LPG - has the reduction been scrapped.

Any reason why you can only have 1 car? As you definately dont need a 4x4 to drive into and out of London. If you want and need a proper 4x4 then get one, and then just grab a cheapo small car for the comute.
