Long story short I've 'inherited' a QNAP TS-212 that was accidentally flashed with the TS-410 firmware... and yes apparently that's possible!

Weirdly, it hasn't completely bricked the unit, in fact it boots and there is a 20-40 second window in which you're able to login via ssh with default credentials, at this point you can even get to the "Setup your QNAP" site so it appears all isn't lost.

Can I figure out a way of kicking off a flash of the unit in time though. Nope :(

So far I've done.....

  • A reset via the reset switch no joy
  • Tried the ubuntu image method no joy
  • The re-flash with Qfinder won't cut it because it takes 20-30 seconds to kick off the process
  • I'm pursuing connecting via the 4 pin terminal on the board but can't find a shifter with the right cable terminations, or the gear to crimp them... plus I don't want to spend a fortune messing around. The first one I bought came with different terminations so either my fudge to get it connected with wrong terminations didn't work, the shifter is dead or the method just won't work!

So has anyone connected to their unit via terminal? Any other ideas?

It's bugging me, because the unit still technically boots, I just need to break the cycle of it shutting down after it boots so I can flash it from SSH.
