any reason not to go 64bit?

been using vista 32 bit on my laptop, but gonna format, just wondering if there is any reason why i should not go to 64 bit ?

also am i correct in saying having a 32 bit edition entitles me to download the 64 bit or did i just make that up?
 
Plenty of reasons not to go 32bit and no reasons not to go 54bit. Unless you know you have some special software or old devices that wont work in 64bit But those are very rare.

Not to download but on the Microsoft website you can pay around £7 and get the 64bit dvd. Not sure what the link is though. Both retail and oem links have been posted before but not sure where.
 
one good reason..

if you've got sod all ram (ie less than 2gb), don't use 64bit vista.

actually with less than 2gb, don't use vista at all
 
Just check all the hardware that you have like tv cards and sound cards for drivers.
 
2GB RAM is the minimum for vista I'd say, but if you have 4GB or more youn should definately be going 64 bit. Between 2GB and 4GB it is completely up to you, though I'd just get 64 bit as long as your cpu supports it as therefore you can instantly use any upgraded memory in the future.
 
As said above, some apps don't work. Sandboxie is one I know doesn't and thats a shame because it's a useful app. This is due to the fact that all x64 drivers have to be signed. This causes a problem with some network monitor apps too.

I can't comment on 64bit, but 32bit works perfectly fine for me with 1GB.

What are the other specs of your machine? Also do you use aero? All machines I have ever seen vista on with 1GB RAM have been painfully slow so I wuld never inflict a machine with 1GB RAM (or less) with Vista. Then again, they've all been early P4s or slower so your machine may be different.
 
I went to 64 bit ages ago and I haven't really had any compatibilty problems at all. One or two odd bits but nothing that a quick google hunt didn't fix.
It's worth it just to enable extra ram, which really makes a difference to vista.
 
Yes I would recommend going 64bit as i installed it 6 months ago and have had not issues with any software or hardware installed since.
